I download a sample Video Playback apk (https://developer.vuforia.com/resources/sample-apps/video-playback-sample-app) and install on Nexus5 with Android lollipop.

I found some problem when open camara
- Camera on Video Playback  is almost black screen
- Default camera is fine

Then, I rebuit this app from source code (java with vuforia android sdk 3.0.9) and  the I found this ploblem again.

How to fix this problem. What's the file in source code to fix.

There's 2 additional threads discussing this issue that you can check for more information:

https://developer.vuforia.com/forum/android/dark-camera-feed-android

https://developer.vuforia.com/forum/android/upgrate-android-601-and-dark-camera

For those running Unity, try adding the following script (which uses the Advanced Camera API that was introduced with Vuforia 6.0) to an object in your Vuforia scene and checking the ADB logs to see what values are returned. Try running on both an affected and unaffected device to see the difference:

adb logcat -s "Unity" "Vuforia" "QCAR" "AR"

using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;
using System.Collections.Generic;

using Vuforia;

public class CheckAutoExposure : MonoBehaviour
{

string exposureCompensation = "";
string minExposureCompensation = "";
string maxExposureCompensation = "";

// Use this for initialization
void Start()
{
  VuforiaARController.Instance.RegisterVuforiaStartedCallback(OnVuforiaStarted);
}

void OnVuforiaStarted()
{

  IEnumerable<CameraDevice.CameraField> cameraFields = CameraDevice.Instance.GetCameraFields();

  foreach (CameraDevice.CameraField field in cameraFields) {
   Debug.Log("Key: " + field.Key + "; Type: " + field.Type);
  }

  CameraDevice.Instance.GetField("exposure-compensation", out exposureCompensation);
  CameraDevice.Instance.GetField("min-exposure-compensation", out minExposureCompensation);
  CameraDevice.Instance.GetField("max-exposure-compensation", out maxExposureCompensation);

  Debug.Log("Exposure Compensation: [ " + minExposureCompensation + " .. " + exposureCompensation + " .. " + maxExposureCompensation + " ]");
}
}

I had this problem too and only fixed it by uninstalling Unity and reinstalling version 5.3.6. Starting over in this way worked.

I am having this problem still on a Lollipop device called the TCL XESS - using Vuforia 6.1.17. After narrowing it down, its a camera exposure issue. Usually the Vuforia camera plugin adjusts it fine, but on this particular device it does not return the proper camera exposure. Has anyone found out how to adjust the camera exposure?

Hi again, @AlessandroB and all the Vuforia team.

I write because I am really surprised on how there is a total radio silence on this issue. It seems that this problem is found on many devices from LG and Google Nexus, and despite of the amount of people complaining about it, there was no official response (at least none I could find). All we would like to read is that you are aware on the issue and working on a fix. Or even that you are aware on the issue but you can't do anything about it. Anything! We are getting a lot of complaints from Nexus users and we can't even answer their ratings with a proper explanation.

We at Many-Worlds would appreciate an official statement on this issue ASAP.

Thank you very much in advance.

I also have this issue on Android 6 with Nexus 5 and Unity 5.5 with latest Vuforia Starter Kit 6.1.  Very very dark image , make it useless for development. I cannot give this a good rating on the Unity asset marketplace due to this issue.  Please get this issue fixed the Nexus 5 is a very common phone and my main development platform.

Thanks

Hi, @AlessandroB

We have received some user feedback on this very exact issue, with Nexus 5. This bug has been active for several months now. Nexus 5 is a pretty common phone, and I don't understand while it isn't getting more attention.

I would appreciate some feedback on the state of the fix, or even better, a workaround to fix this issue.

Thank you in advance.

i have dark camera problem not a black camera.  i misunderstood poberauer.  ı think its common because sample app and blippar has same excat problem after i upgraded my lg g3 to android 6.0. thats why i thought it might be related to 6.0 and manifest due to new camera permmissions which this apps cant get. i just find a temporary solution by opening flashlight.

I wonder if it's experienced only by a few users or if it's a common problem.

In that case, it's on the bug list? because it greatly affect the recognition performance, when in less than perfect lighting conditions.

mdurli : You're right, My previous message was in reply to recent posts from poberauer and vuffoorrrr on the "black camera / no camera" issue, which is to do with Android 6 (M) permissions.

I have no update yet on the original "Dark camera" issue when lighting conditions are not good.

Hello Alessandro, thanks for the link that addresses the "black" camera issue, but this thread started with a "dark" camera issue that I'm still experiencing.

I experienced it with a Nexus 5 with various versions of Android (5 and 6 and their minor versions), through various versions of Unity and Vuforia.
I also tried with a Nexus 7 tablet.

If I use the stock video app as reference, in good lighting conditions the vuforia video preview brightness is almost the same as stock.
If the lighting conditions are not very good, the brightness of the preview drops dramatically, and the preview is very dark.
This is not happening with same light conditions with the stock camera app in video mode.

This can be easily reproduced with your sample apps.

Is there any way to regulate the brightness of the preview?

Thanks,

Mattia

Yes they changed permission system in android 6.0 whenever an app try to do something that needs permission it asks to get permission in first  launch. But dont know how can we get permission in manifest. i will have a look at it.

Same Problem here, Android 6 (23) = black camera. It seems that the manifest approach does not apply any more.I deleted all sdk above 22 and try to build, but no luck.

Hello,

i am having same issue i tried image sample too but still so dark. there were no problem when i was using android 5 couple week ago. Right now i am using android 6 in my lg g3. My first problem was related to adroid version:

https://developer.vuforia.com/forum/device-support/android-m-vuforia-initializing-failed&sort=2

is it wise to use android target as api level 22? if i dont use it i got same error on android 6.0

maybe dark screen is related to api level what do you think?

edit: i use unity 5 with latest version of vuforia  and changing api level to 23 (6.0) works on image sample(no error above) but dark screen still does not fixed i use flash light to test for now.

i just used blippr today. it has same issue too. camera is very dark only in android 6.

I'm having this issue with my Nexus 6, Android 6 (portrait mode, Unity).  In an average room it's too dark to track.  Only in the brightest conditions is tracking possible.  Seems like the camera auto-brightness isn't happening like it does when using the lens as a camera.

So, it seems like it may be not caused by Vuforia per se, but rather it may be  a more general camera issue with Nexus 5 on Android 5.

Nevertheless, at the moment we are investigating if anything might be done on the Vuforia side. Will update.

Exactly the same behaviour I've experimented on a Motorola Moto G 2nd edition, Vuforia 5.0.5, Unity 3D 5.2.1f1, and it is randomly, sometimes it happen, sometimes don't, I have tried with video Auto Play on and off.

Hello, I add myselft to the list of Nexus 5 users with Lollipop 5, 5.01 and 5.1, with the dark camera issue.

I haven't tested it with previous Android versions, but the stock camera in rec mode, in same lighting conditions, is much more clear.

I see the thread is in the Android forum, but I can add that I'm using Unity and facing the same problem.

Thanks

Hi JcDenton,

this thread is discussing an issue about a "dark camera"  issue on Nexus 5 under mid-low lighing conditions, where the camera image is still visible but appears dark as if it was in very low lighting; if you're seeing a completely (100%) black image,  that might be a different issue;

if you are using Unity 4.6, I would recommend upgrading to Vuforia 4.0.105, which has been extensively tested on Unity 4.6 and Unity 5 too; the camera image o Nexus 5 might still appear a bit dark, but with 4.0  you should not see a completely black camera background.

Hello,

Is there any update on this issue?

I was about to create a topic for the exact reason but found this one..

My setup is:

  • Unity 4.6.1f1
  • Vuforia 3.0.9
  • Nexus 5 with Android 5.1

Unity GUI shows up fine but the camera feed is black. The error log I get is this:

04-22 13:37:06.937: E/Unity(2110): Could not initialize the tracker.

04-22 13:37:06.937: E/Unity(2110): (Filename: ./artifacts/AndroidManagedGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49)

My project used to work before Lollipop update and I haven't made any changes to it after the update.

I tried some of the proposed solutions found in this forum and generally but with no success yet. I am attaching a screenshot of the application

If anything comes up or there is a documented solution to that please provide. This is really important for me, as it is my PhD project.

Thanks in advance

Just want to bump this topic having just cone across the same issue. Nexus 5 lollipop and all unity vuforia scenes exhibit a dark camera when in slightly darker conditions. Looks to me like the exposure is not properly correcting.

Any new solutions to this? I'm testing with 3.10 does 4 correct it?

Cheers
