unable to access device camera

August 29, 2011 - 10:18am #1

We are trying to make an Augmented Reality app for an Android device. Unity lets me put the app on the phone, but there is no image on my phone (just a blank screen with "trial version" at the bottom right. For some reason the app is not even turning on the device's camera. We are using Unity 3.4.0f5 and we are trying to put it on an EVO 4G at the moment.

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

I dont think so. I have install all component in an other computer but it doesn't work at all. It still don't recognize the trackables.
I suppose I'll have to work with the Galaxy ACE.

Did you recently update your Android SDK and/or Eclipse ADT? You may be running into this issue: http://ar.qualcomm.at/node/2001873

Calling finish() is correct. That should completely destroy the current activity, so rather than resuming the activity next time you will be recreating it.

I don't know what's happening but now when I try run the sample I have a new error(can`t load the lib's)...(log attached) A week ago I was able to run both app's, mine and sample, but now I can't even open the sample...
I 'd try adding "Activity.finish()" at the end of onPause method, but eclipse gave an error, so I put just "finish()" and it seems works. Then I go to onResume but I don't know what I have to do to reinitialize, I tried adding onStart, later onRestart and finally startActivity(intent), but none works...

Sorry for been so stupid, but I feel a bit incompetent.

@cesar

This is probably an issue outlined in the release notes:

Quote:

On certain devices, the video preview rendering and the rendering layer order may be mismatched after another application overlays the QCAR rendering window. Apps may optionally destroy the Android activity with a call to Activity.finish() in your main Activity's onPause() and may reinitialize it onResume(). This no longer happens on devices running Honeycomb or above.

I've Also got the
"03-28 23:50:51.375: E/AR(7725): CameraDevice::getCameraCalibration(): Failed to get camera calibration because the camera is not initialized."
error...
I've got a Galaxy A(SHW-M100S) device
(2.3.4 Gingerbread,
Kernel 2.6.35.7,
Build ID: GINGERBREAD.EI08
Band number(?): M100S.EF14.2254.ST )

Any solutions? I'm trying to run the ImageTargets Sample app, and I get a black screen once the app is loaded, but if I press the menu button, I get the menus.

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting, checking to see if the other camera apps were working, and all was fine....

I've attached my Log File.

Sorry but It isn't fixed. Now the screen work an you can see the camera view but the sample app (nor my app) now recognise the trackables... I said it was fixed before but after some tries I go back to the sample app and I realize it don't work.

Now I have another problem, but I dont know if it is connected. When I was working on my app before this new episode, sometimes, my device reboot suddenly. Then, all this time I can't play the app's, It didn't reboot anytime but now the reboots are back... Could be connected?

Okay, we've updated the device settings on our server. Please delete the app from the device and try again. Make sure your device is connected to the internet.

Let us know if it works. Thanks!

Yes, it has the same proble, a balck screen instead of camera view. When y push the play botton of eclipse the app start, the vuforia icon appears an then (when it supposed to be the camera view) I only see a black screen. I can push the botton of options and change the mode...etc but always with the black screen.

I dont update any program, but I cant say if there was some in background updating... I tried reinstalling the app, also I reboot the devise before...

This log looks fine. Did this run have the same problem? What is happening, exactly? Is the app crashing, is the camera black, can you see the augmentation if you point the camera at the target?

Do you remember if the device received an OS update just before this stopped working? What version of Android is it running?

I suggest uninstalling the app and reinstalling it, if you haven't already tried that.

Hmm, it looks like it's having trouble opening the camera:

Quote:

CameraDevice::getCameraCalibration(): Failed to get camera calibration because the camera is not initialized.

Can you open the device's camera application?

I suggest rebooting the phone, let us know if that straightens things out.

I tried with the sample proyect ImageTargets(log attached). It work with the ACE so I suppose it's problem of the SCL.

We have this device and tested it, it seems to be working fine. Nothing should have changed recently. Are you still having trouble? I suggest trying one of the sample applications, if you are testing with a custom app. If the sample also fails please provide the log.

Thanks,

Re: unable to access device camera

Try uninstalling the app, putting the device in Airplane mode, then reinstalling and running. Does that make it work? This will help us narrow down the problem, thanks.

Hi,

Re: unable to access device camera

March 5, 2012 - 12:38pm #20

Thanks for the report.

Custom ROMs and rooted devices are not generally supported by QCAR. The two ICS devices probably won't work for this reason.

We'll look into the Galaxy SL and the Galaxy Tab. I might recommend that the users reinstall the application. If that doesn't work, they can reinstall and then run the app for the first time in Airplane mode.

Do you happen to know if these users were upgrading an existing 1.0.6 version or if they were new installs?

Thanks,

- Kim

Re: unable to access device camera

March 4, 2012 - 3:06pm #19

Hello Kim, I've upgraded my app with the latest version of the sdk and for most people there is no problem but several of my users have reported black screens when entering the augmented reality mode.

They only see a black screen instead of the camera but my overlay is correctly rendered.

I don't have access to their log but here is their devices and roms :

i9003 (galaxy SL) rom : XXKPQ (2.3.6) (not a custom rom)
HTC Sensation running ICS 4.0.3 (custom rom : InsertCoin ICS 4.6.1)
Samsung Galaxy S with an ICS ROM (teamhacksung's rom).

I also have an other user that don't have a black screen but the marker is not recognized and tracked, he is using a Galaxy Tab 7.7 [samsung]

You can get my app there if you want to test it by yourself : https://market.android.com/details?id=com.ar.augment

Re: unable to access device camera

March 3, 2012 - 10:33am #18

I'm using the most recent version of the SDK. The phone is a Nexus S with Android 4.0. I'm using Unity so I'm not sure how to get the runtime log.

Re: unable to access device camera

March 2, 2012 - 1:45pm #17

Are you using the new 1.5 version of the SDK? I recommend upgrading if not.

If you are seeing the problem with 1.5, please let us know what device (model number) and Android OS version you are using. Also please provide the runtime log, you can access this via the DDMS view in Eclipse.

Have this issue been resolved? I'm having the same problem. I run the app and I just get a black screen. Is this problem only in found in some models?

Re: unable to access device camera

Unfortunately there's not much we can do without a new release. This is an issue we're looking into for our next update.

It's possible that your network request is timing out before it can complete, try connecting via the fastest approach available (e.g. wifi > 3G > 2G).

Hi,

Thanks for your kind help, time and support. I just experimented as mentioned in Peter’s suggestions too, but there is no difference in the result.

Is it possible to isolate network issue to initialize camera? If it is not possible, is it possible to download the required setting and package the same along with APK and way to use these setting?

With thanks and regards

I'm afraid the log file doesn't tell us anything new. Take a look at this thread, Peter is helping another user with a similar issue there and has some suggestions in the last post:

Just to check, have you upgraded to the 1.0.6 release of the SDK?

If you have upgraded, double check your internet connection with the mobile browser before running the app.

Try deleting and reinstalling the app.

If it's still failing, can you copy the full runtime log (from start to stop of a fresh install) and attach it here? You can view the log with the DDMS tool that comes with Android, or by running "adb logcat" on the command line.

The SDK downloads the device settings automatically, but your device needs to be connected to the internet for it to work. After it has downloaded the settings you can run the application without a connection.

Re: unable to access device camera

September 26, 2011 - 12:46am #8

Hi,

After logcat analysis, I found that the core of the problem is with initialization of Camera (cannot download device start-up settings). I tested this app on two different devices and both are giving the same problem. Please find the following logcat messages.

09-26 13:02:38.989: DEBUG/QCAR(8982): ERROR: Error - cannot download device start-up settings. Failed to initialize the QCAR SDK. Device settings must be downloaded at least once for the SDK to work.

09-26 13:02:39.629: ERROR/QCAR(8982): InitQCARTask::onPostExecute: Network connection required to initialize camera settings. Please check your connection and restart the application. If you are still experiencing problems, then your device may not be currently supported. Exiting.

As for the logcat message, I need to download start-up setting. Can you please guide me how (from where) can download these settings ?

Please guide me to fix this issue at the earliest possible.

With thanks and regards

Have you tried running any of the sample applications (e.g. ImageTargets) and do you get the same result? If so, can you share the runtime log with us? You can access this using the DDMS tool that comes with Android, or run "adb logcat" on the command line.

Thanks,
