Upgrate to Android 6.0.1 and dark camera

Topic solved

Hi all,

I got the dark camera problem with my latest build on Android : the camera barely see the marker, and the video feed is very dark.

The only thing I changed (that I can think off) is that I upgraded my Android Galaxy Tab A to 6.0.1.

Is it a known bug? What can I do to get it fixed?

This happen on the 3 tablets I  installed my project on. (before all was fine)

Many thanks

Thomas

Hello,

We've spent a bit more time investigating this issue and have found the following Android 6.0 devices do not exhibit a dark camera feed when running Vuforia 6.X:

  • Nexus 6
  • Samsung S6 Edge (SM-G925F)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (SM-T813)
  • Nexus 7
  • Galaxy S5 (SM-G906S)
  • Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603)
  • Sony Xperia Z2 (D6503)
  • Nexus 9

We will continue looking into this issue and provide relevant updates when available.

Thanks.

I have had this problem and been googling like a maniac and tried different things.

I then realised that my API setting were automatic in player settings in Unity 5. I unchecked that and set it to GLES 2.0

I also played in the Android XML plugin file, but Im not sure if that made any difference really.

Now when I run it on Moto G4, it displays the camera correctly and finds the trackers I have tested.

Same problem here! Got my SM-T813 today, everything was working perfectly, then an automated update started and now I have a dark screen!

It's rather impossible to use Vuforia for development if issues like these persist :(

edit: can somebody confirm if an os flash back to 6.0 or 5.1.1 fixes the issue?

It seems like a lot of people are struggling with a dark camera.

I can still see the UI elements in my app without any problems. The camera itself is dark though, I THINK this is due to the OS on the phone. It all works fine on my sony xperia phone. However on my Nexus phone is dark, almost black.

Any updates would be nice! I also saw in my .xml file in the Android plugin that someone had mentioned that it was already set to:

<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="14" android:targetSdkVersion="22" /> if that would be something. (read from another thread that change the 23 to 22 could solve it).

maybe set the API to GL2.0 instead of autodetect?

Hi,

thank you for checking this out.

What is annoying is that is was working fine, same app, same device, until I update to the latest Android 6.0.1. Maybe it is not even related, it is an assumption that I make.

So you are telling me that this is limited  to this specific device, and  I should  play with the new Advance Camera API to try to fix it?

thank you

Thomas

Hello,

I was able to replicate the dark camera issue on a Samsung SM-T550. Please find the video here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/fo7uj49hqpwm2q0/Samsung_SM-T550_dark_camera_preview.mp4?dl=0

The video shows the difference between the native camera app preview and a simple Vuforia 6 sample app. It specifically demonstrates that this device has an aggressive auto exposure (AE) correction. If you watch the camera app as I scan around the room, you can see that it makes significant corrects based upon the lighting conditions. The AE correction can also be seen on the app running Vuforia, although to a lesser degree.

Note that Vuforia has limited control over the performance and quality of frames that are captured from the device camera pipeline. For example, we do not adjust a devices AE settings. Instead, we leave this up to the OEM's implementation per device, which introduces fragmentation that manifests itself when running apps where Vuforia is integrated. I don't understand exactly what is going on in this case, but I can guess that it may be due to the fact that the camera preview resolution (controlled by Vuforia) has an AE setting that behaves differently from the native camera app (likely running at a different preview resolution).

Note that Vuforia 6 has introduced the Advanced Camera API which allows for additional access to Android camera settings, such as AE. Perhaps this can be experimented with on this platform to find a setting that is most suitable.

Thanks

Hello,

Still waiting on procurement of this device in an attempt to replicate the issue. New ticketing system is not helping ;-)

Thanks

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback. We currently do not have any tablets running Android M at this so I cannot directly evaluate.

I will look to procure a similar device in the near future and report back my findings.

Thanks

Hello,

Apologies for not being more specific. I'm looking for the string in the field "Model number" under Settings->About device. My expectation is that is it similar to SM-T357W.

I'm asking to determine the specifics of this device, and if we have it in our inventory.

Thanks

Same here.  Using Vuforia 6.0.112 on Samsung Tab A 8" running Marshmallow - If I use the native camera app, the exposure adjusts based on lighting.  It seems this feature is removed for Vuforia, and the image is INSANELY dark - and therefore the trackers are practically impossible to pick up, unless they have light directly upon them.  This isn't an issue on iOS.

I've searched the forums and google, and have found many with the same issue, but not a single solution.  This issue is of utmost importance to Android devs.
