Vuforia with Front facing camera in Android

October 24, 2012 - 10:21am #1

Hi,

Our app is not displayed in Google play when searched from Google Nexus 7.
The reason seems to be

as it's having just the Front camera.

If I remove the above we might see it in the Google play. But will it work on the Nexus 7 as it's having only the Front camera.
Does vuforia (sdk and unity) support the Front camera?
Will my apps using Vuforia will run in Nexus 7?

Thanks

Hi, one thing you can try is to add the <uses-features ...> for the camera with "android:required=false"; so you still keep the <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" /> clause in your manifest, but add a couple of <uses-features> like below:

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" />
<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.camera" android:required="false" />
<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.camera.front" android:required="false" />

In theory that should allow your app to safely pass the Google Play filters, while still having the camera permission ON.

Beside that, you might be happy to know that Vuforia 2.0 (which is going to be released very soon) will support both front and rear cameras, including an option to enable "Mirroring" mode for the front camera; that shouldm work on any devices with any type of cameras.

But meanwhile, have a try with the trick above and let me know how it goes.
