vuforia + unity? vuforia + blender?

December 11, 2012 - 1:00am #1

Hi,

I am developing an application on android. May I know is it possible to use blender to match with vuforia instead of unity?

Or I must use unity in developing the apps?

Chu

Hi, you can find the same link in the new developer portal:

Hi, in general it is possible to export models from Blender to "OBJ" format and then convert the OBJ models to OpenGL C++ header files that you can incorporate in your Android application code;

the full process (with code snippets) is explained here in this Post:

https://ar.qualcomm.at/content/android-how-do-i-replace-teapot

However, the limitations of the above are:

- you need to compile your models with your application (i.e. cannot load 3D models dynamically, for instance from the SD card)

- the approach works for relatively simple models with a single material/texture applied, while for complex models consisting of different sub-parts (each part with a different texture), that approach becomes tricky

- in some cases you might need to customize the GLSL shaders to obtain better visual results (with respect to the basic shaders that are shown in the Vuforia samples)

So, you can program in Android natively, but for complex models and/or for dynamic loading of 3D models (e.g. from SD card), and/or if you are not too comfortable with shader programming and OpenGL, then Unity is usually a much better choice.
