Is WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE Permission Mandatory?

September 19, 2015 - 3:07pm #1

Hi there,

I have a very simple question. I'm using Vuforia Unity plugin and my project uses User Defined Targets. I myself don't save any data to external storage. Though, Vuforia requires WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE Android permission. Is this permission mandatory or can I get rid of it safely?

Thank you :)

Vuforia (as of Vuforia 5.0.5) strictly requires only the following Android Permissions:

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE"/>

Theadditional WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission may be needed only in a few very specific cases, e.g. for storing calibration data for optical see-through eyewar devices.

The WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE is needed to access the SD Card. I was able to compile and run our VuforiaSamples app without it, but still recommended to fully test your app when adding or removing any permissions.
