Area Target Blocking Light in Unity

I am using area targets in unity. 

The area target is a room with walls and a ceiling.

I find that if I place lights outside the walls they don't penetrate.

The area target itself obviously isn't visible.

 

How do I stop this?

This could be related to the Occlusion Mesh of the area target: https://library.vuforia.com/features/environments/area-targets/area-targets-in-unity.html

If you can eleborate on what you're trying to achieve and how it is not working, that would be helpful to get a better answer on the forums.
