I think, at the moment it is quite hard to get started with Area Targets.
At the Matterport platform you have to subscribe to (at least) a pro plan. Then you have to use the pro-camera (buy or use as a service) to scan the desired location. Every 3d Model download costs extra. You have to apply to get access to the (beta) API. If you have gone through all this you can finally start testing.
Area Target it is an Enterprise feature. So time and money should not be relevant. But what, if you are a indie developer?
There are a lot of ways to get a 3D scan of a location (photogrammetry, iPadPro with LiDAR, other 3D scan techniques) and I think it is just a matter of time until you support more models/platforms.
