Physical 3D model of a city suitable as an area target?

September 29, 2020 - 3:05am #1

Dear team & community, I am trying to enrich an existing physical 3D model of a city with AR features. E.g. points of interests, route planning ... Find photos of the 3d model I am talking about attached. The object is approximately 200cm in length and 150cm in width. My problem is: I'm not sure about what kind of vuforia target type to use.

Model target: I do not have access to 3D model data, so a model target ain't the right choice here.

Object target: Object is way to big to be a object target, isn't it?

So my choice would be the area target type and to scan the object with the iPad LiDAR scanner. Do you agree with me or am I totally wrong? I'd really appreciate your suggestions.

Best,

Henrik

Thank you for your quick response! :) I'll give it a try with both target types (area and model). I'll report my results here. (Could take a while) :-P

Physical 3D model of a city suitable as an area target?

Hi,

Its a yes and no :) let me elaborate below.

Technically you have 2 possibility:

1. Area targets as you mentioned but the target is outside and there is the concern about the lighting and shadows.

2. Scan it for Model Targets but again we have the same lighting/shadow concerns and the scene seems to be to cluttered. more info here: https://library.vuforia.com/content/vuforia-library/en/articles/Solution/how-to-create-model-targets-from-3d-scans.html

Unfortunately I don't have a use this solution answer for your use-case however you should give it a try with Area Targets as it would be easiest to find if it works or not.

Hope it helps.
