Question about cloud recognition detection

June 19, 2013 - 3:04am #1
I have a question about the cloud recognition.

When a user try to scan an image, what is really send to the vuforia cloud recognition servers ? Is it exactly what the camera is filming (like a photo) or only a kind of signature footprint which is compare server-side to all signatures image of our database ?

How long is it storing server-side ? Only during the scan or more ?

One of our customer ask us but we don't know what answer. I didn't find the information in the documentation.

I agree it would probably be a bit helpful for Qualcomm to publicly clarify what's actually going on.

This issue *does* come up quite regularly with clients - the question is whether or not the app is uploading the raw picture coming from the camera.

What happens is that corporate lawyers get involved and want to know if our app is potentially uploading pictures of children to some indeterminate server out of both their and our control, and if so, what happens to them.

Being unable to *definitively* answer that question is a potential deal-killer.

Of course, I'm positive this isn't what's happening - it would be a huge bandwidth hog, but it's also unneccessary for the image correlation test.  It obviously makes more sense to do the necessary feature extraction in order to do the correlation in the device and send *that* to the server.

Unfortunately, I currently can't point the lawyer to something that says that.  So far, we've mainly been working with apps that do local reco so this has been much easier to work around, but as we shift more to cloud reco I expect this issue to increasingly add friction to deals.

Of course, target generation is a different matter - clearly we're uploading an image, and we can deal with that issue separately.

Question about cloud recognition detection

Hello Alessandro,

Oh yes I understand that the exact type cannot be disclosed. It's completely normal.

But may we at least know if it's the actual picture which is sent to the server of Vuforia ?

Hi, the exact type of data sent by Vuforia to the Cloud is not public.
