Using VWS (php) for Device Databases

March 22, 2013 - 2:14am #1

Hello,

just a quicke question :

Is it theorically possible to use the vws code (or some other code) to work with the device databases instead of the cloud databases ?

What it would  offer is something like :

- create a database

- delete a database

- post an image in a database

- ask if the generated dat is available

- download the dat if it is available

I think this is what the VWS offer with cloud database (except for the download part because you don't need to with cloud, right ?), but would it work with modified code on a device database. Of course our final goal being downloading the dat+xml by code, if this is doable with cloud, cloud is fine with us but I don't think it's possible is it ?

Thanks for information

Hi friends,

Is there any update at that issue ? As NıcoTony told , we really need to access device databases from our system dynamically and add new images not manually.

Yes that is what we are doing right now.

But when the project will be off our hands, the admin will have to do this himself. I wanted for him to have a simplier interface, with only one page in it, where he can just put his dayly image and off he goes (I would have been generating file name with day date, etc etc so he really has to do nothing except choose an image). This will just be a little harder for him this way, doable I guess, but clearly harder to sell to him.

It is possible to download a device database and to store it on the device's file system. You can then load the device database to your app at runtime. It's not necessary to package this w/ the app when it is built, that's just a convenient mechanism for distributing your targets w/ the app. So you can version your targets in the way that you describe. This is how developers are supporting apps that have rotating portfolios of targets. But you'll need to prep your device databases for distribution manually. There is no API for packaging these programmatically.

Thanks again for answering.

I tried the cloud sample and I already understood that part, just wished there was a workaround because here is what our app should do :

- be able to work offline (with no internet connection available on the device)

- be able to update when the user gets a connection

Now, if I am right, I have to drop one of this feature because :

- If I use the device database there won't be updates possible unless we republish the app everytime on the stores (which is a bad option) OR the admin manually download the dat files to do the updates using vuforia.com by hand, I wanted some kind of script for that part to avoid admin having to handle this part manually.

- If I use the cloud database the app just won't work without a permanently active internet connection

I think we'll go with the admin having to handle more work, but this is not perfect for us.

Please correct me if I'm wrong somewhere, and again, thank you for your time and patience.

BUT does it allow (via cloud)  ?

- ask if the generated dat is available

- download the dat if it is available

That is not how cloud works.  It's all transparent as your database lives there, so every request pings the cloud.

There is no concept of downloading the database from the cloud.

Try the sample to better understand how it works :)

Hello,

First thank you for your fast response!

Yes your answer makes sense. from what I understand it would be possible to use the VWS for the cloud databases to :

- create a database

- delete a database

- post an image in a database

BUT does it allow (via cloud)  ?

- ask if the generated dat is available

- download the dat if it is available

As long as you can't save them via userDefined (and thus have persistant data), user defined is of no use to us.

By the way it doesn't have to be an image taken within an AR application, this could just be a simple jpg/png. But that is not really the issue, the issue is retrieving the dat+xml files (without the user/admin manually doing it).

Hope this is possible,

Thanks again

Hi NicoTony,

At present there is no runtime access that will let you modify the device database at runtime.

The nearest to thsi currently is the UserDefinedTargets applications where an internal device database is built up as the user clicks on more targets.  However this database cannot be saved and cannot currently persist.

Please make a feature request in the right place in the forums if you think this will be beneficial.

In the meantime one possible workaround would be to grab the UDT image and post to the Cloud Database via your own Gateway Server i.e. do not upload directly from the device.

Hope this makes sense.
