Creating an Image Target, trackable from different angle

June 23, 2014 - 2:07pm #7

hey all,

we are looking to create image target that is trackable from mutiple angles. the image currently tracks very well from the top but on from a angle on the side, is it just that I upload the image target by taking a picture of the target from an angle?

It sounds like you are using User-Defined Targets. User-Defined targets are best captured with the camera perpendicular to the target surface, so that the point data generated from the features in the image is not distorted by arbitrary angles. Check these articles for more info:

Thanks for the reply dm3d. Although we're not the OP, we also face this need in our project, and it'll be great if you can give us some comments. :)

Our scenario is, we wish to allow the user to manually crop a (not necessarily rectanglar) area, and we will "rectify" it into a rectangular image, and use that as the target. For example, the user wants to use a piece of (rectangular) textured paper as the target, but it''ll take too much time for him/her to take a photo with the camera close and perpendicular to the paper. Therefore he will simple take a photo contaning the paper, and touch its four corners. Our program will then rectify the paper and use that as the target to do AR applications.

However, our bottleneck is currently, how to use a user-defined image to create a user-defined target on the mobile end? The ImageTargetBuilder->build() will only use the full frame from the camera (without any cropping or modification). And the usual Image Target requires operations on the computer. Do you have some suggestions on how to build a user-defined target based on an image on the mobile side?

Thanks a lot!

As you pointed out, the ImageTargetBuilder class takes responsibility for building the user-defined image target based on the camera frames. There's no method for inserting your own modified image into the ImageTargetBuilder.

I see... Thanks a lot for your reply dm3d! I also read that Cloud recognition API may be a get-around in some FAQ of the forum. Let me RTFM first... Thanks again!

grapeot and devnyc, if you guys figure this out, please post back so we know. This seems to be a pretty central feature but I have yet to find an AR engine that really does it.

Thanks in advance!

Currently I'm still struggling in how to make a get-around with cloud recognition. Looks the server-client framework and authentication key is pretty complicated (lots of SHA hashing) if we wish to create a target from mobile. If I finally manage to do it, will post it here.
