Trackable API

October 13, 2011 - 5:49am #1

I will echo all of the other comments on this board as the situation with the QCAR has meant that, even though we have excellent results in our app with it, we must change technology in order to achieve the outcome we require.

We desperately need to be able to create our own trackable dat file - either via an API or using software locally. Our app needs the trackable to be changed based on location/date so the current system is unworkable.
Ideally, it would also be dynamic - which other SDKs are able to achieve.

It's very unfortunate as the SDK is excellent otherwise.
Shame. :(

Hi stan, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this; as already mentioned with other users, what I can do is to invite you to add another post in the Forum Wish-List thread (if you did not do it yet):

https://developer.vuforia.com/forum/general-discussion/wish-list

We have other users asking for same or similar features, so the best you can do is really to add an extra post in such wish-list.

Alessandro, cloud recognition

January 2, 2013 - 3:05am #18

Alessandro, cloud recognition by vuforia is an amazing thing and we have already released new update of our app using it.

However that is ONLINE only. There is also need for having offline targets updating regularly. Cloud has got an API to manage targets so our client zone on our server can create and modify targets on the fly but offline targets are stick to manual intervention. There are several use cases why offline targets are needed e.g. campains that run on city lights or billboards etc. Many tablets do not even have 3G and many users don't have data plan. So all devices without 3G outside of wifi reach are out of the game.

App can download new prepared dataset like once a week and can download also some content to show offline. Update can happen when on Wifi.

However last piece of puzzle, dataset creation is manual.

Hi, Stan, correct, Vuforia

Hi, Stan, correct, Vuforia 2.0 introduces user-defined targets. The API does not support storing user-created targets in a persistent dataset, though.

On the other hand, 2.0 also comes with a major feature called "Cloud Recognition" which offers both a client-side detection/tracking engine (on the device) and an extra REST API called VWS (Vuforia Web Services) that would allow you to upload image targets onto a cloud database and use those image targets later for detection and tracking.

v2 user defined targets

January 1, 2013 - 12:18pm #16

v.2 introduced something called user defined targets. If I understand it properly it does allow to create image target from camera input directly on the device. So would it be possible to use this to create image target and store it in dataset? It could be used some ARM architecture emulator on linux server and run the vuforia 2 and give it some image instead of camera input. Just a theory, did not look for exact API to store daraset. Even if it would be possible is it ok with EULA?

yup,  I have to agree, an offline trackable system is a must... I'm battling away here trying to get a single trackable..  the "processing" screen just keeps showing up. I was really hoping this would be taken care of with the new vuforia site... sadly it continues.  now with a Stand alone Target Manager I'm guessing these issues would not arise...  or would it ?

Hi mark2k, can I invite you to put your desired API change/extensions in the Wish List thread:

https://developer.vuforia.com/forum/general-discussion/wish-list

Also, one way to visualize the target images that you have uploaded is to login into the Target Manager:

https://developer.vuforia.com/targetmanager/

From there you can browse the content of your cloud database (if this can help at least partially).

This is exactly what I

This is exactly what I do.

And this is exactly what I ask about - the API is limited and does not allow this basic and highly needed features

API limits - will it be extended?

December 18, 2012 - 1:15am #11

Hi,

I was wondering why API does not have a method that returns all targets. Or at least gets a list of target IDs and returns them. Making a requests one by one is not efficient for both the client and the server in all aspects including timing and resources. Your servers are getting too much traffic for nothing.

The other issue is that VWS does not return a metadata information and image with target info. We must get at least metadata to be able to put the image path and then recieve it. Currently there seem to be no way to view the image for me as VWS client.

Is those issues are going to change?

You can now upload and generate trackables from your own applications using our VWS Developer API and a Cloud Reco account. You'll need to sign up for a free account, create a Cloud Database, and can then provision and manage your targets using API calls - https://developer.vuforia.com/resources/dev-guide/managing-targets-cloud-database-using-developer-api

No, at present the only way to create trackables is through the online TMS.

Hi there,

is there a possibility to create trackables externally? Or is it decided anything in this topic?

I also must agree with the comments. I am developing a user generated content sharing system using AR, currently requiring users to send an image to me, which is then converted into a tracker and added to the trackables in the app.

As an automated process of tracker generation is fundamental to this working on any scale and for general UX, I am considering other options.

However, I must say that the vuforia system itself is great in other repsects, i.e. tracker recognition, speed and stability etc etc.

I hope that this feature is added in the near future...

I totally agree, the Vuforia technology is excellent, however we cant use it if there is not going to be a way to generate the trackables offline.

Qualcomm, could you perhaps provide some info if this feature is going to be supported in the (near) future?

Hey HarmonyUK,

I'd like to give this post a bump and also ask you what solution you ended up using that does allow for a trackable API?

I love this SDK but I can't use it as anything more than a demo technology without the ability to manage my trackables by myself.

Is there any date for the release of an offline trackable creator ?
The app I am developping must allow my clients to create their own trackables, and i would like to be able to create automatically the dat and xml files, so they just have to load the jpegs and enter the dimensions.
