AutoFocus not working on Mot ME860

September 12, 2013 - 12:53am #1

Hi,

When I am testing my app on Motorola ME860, I found the autofocus not working therefor it always fails recognizing image targets.   The app is build upon Vuforia 2.6.7 with Unity extension.   The app calls SetFocusMode(FOCUS_MODE_TRIGGERAUTO) to trigger an autofocus manually;  This call runs as expected on most testing devices such as Samsung, HTC, Huawei and others.  It fails on Motorola ME860.

The info from Motorola device is as following:

Model Num:  ME860

OS: Android 2.3.4

Could you please check it out?  Thanks.

The Normal focus mode does not implement secific automatic adjustments of the focus; the TriggerAuto mode triggers a single Autofocus event (i.e. as soon as you set the Focus Mode to TriggerAuto, the camera will be adjusted as if it was in autofocus mode, but after this "one-shot" adjustment, it will remain the same, until you call another SetFocusMode ( TriggerAuto ) via the API).

Hi Alessandro,

We have tested build-in camera application as well as couple of 3rd party camera applications on Mot, all have auto-focus function working.  So we guess the auto-focus function is implemented by Mot.

What behaviour is defined by Normal mode?  What is the difference between TriggerAuto and Normal?

Hi Jason, thanks for the report.

Not all devices support autofocus, so it is perfectly possible that the call to trigger an autofocus may not work on the ME860;

this is not a bug, but just a specific constrain (or limitation) of the device; in this case, the best is to try using the normal focus mode, being aware of the fact that it will work with non-ideal focus and thus potentially reduced performances.
