New iPad Pro 10.5 Black screen with Rear Camera

Description of the problem:

The issue is that the back camera does not work with Vuforia on the iPad Pro 10.5 inch models. This has been replicated in both the custom Unity app we are developing and the Unity Vuforia Image Target Sample. The front camera works (not helpful for our app), but when the back camera is used it only results in a black screen.

We have reproduced this on multiple devices of the same models, multiple iOS versions, multiple Unity versions, and believed we have narrowed it down being the iPad Pro 10.5 inch.

This is going to be blocking the production release of our app if we cannot resolve this.

Details of tests:

  • Device Models confirmed to have the issue (all iPad Pro 10.5 inch of various types):
    • A# - A1701      Model# - MQDT2LL/A     (OS 10.3.2) (Confirmed on multiple devices of same model to ensure it was not that specific device)
    • A# - A1709      Model# - MPHG2LL/A     (OS 11.0 beta)
  • Installed OS version confirmed with issue:
    • iOS 10.3.2
    • iOS 11.0 beta
  • Unity Versions Tested:
    • 5.5.2f1
    • 5.6.2f1
  • Platform:
    • We are using Vuforia Unity, cannot comment on the others
  • Description:
    • The screen where the camera should be displayed is completely black when using rear camera
    • Note: in the sample Vuforia project you can still use the menu, but there is no camera feed
  • Device orientation:
    • Any orientation
  • Camera:
    • Back camera only has the issue
    • Confirmed that it is not a hardware issue (the camera works fine in the camera app)
  • Samples:
    • Used Vuforia Unity sample project, specifically the Image Target Test scene (did not test other scenes)
  • Concurrent camera access:
    • are you aware of other software potentially accessing your device camera while Vuforia is running? - No
  • Occurrence:
    • The issue is always present on the affected models

We also tested other devices where both the custom app and the sample worked to narrow the issue down to being specific to the iPad Pro 10.5 inch.

Devices that it worked on:

  • Models tested that it worked on:
    • iPad Pro 12.9 inch
    • iPad Pro 9.7 inch
    • iPad 5th gen (MP2F2)
    • iPhone 7
    • iPhone 6s
    • iPhone 6
    • iPhone 5
  • OS Versions tested that it worked on for these models:
    • 10.3
    • 10.3.2

Please let me know if there is any additional info you need from me to help resolve this.

Very good description.

I´m experiencing the exact same problem and can confirm.

Would please someone from Vuforia respond?

Vuforia Support,

The link to the known-issue is dated February 6th. It's now April 19th. Any update on this? When can we expect an update with support for Xcode 9.3 / iOS 11.3 / ARKit 1.5?

Thanks.

I got the iPad 10.5 today, and at startup we got a black screen saying "Vuforia failed to initialize". I don't know if this problem also happened on other iPad models.
