AR application with 3d models

February 15, 2013 - 1:36pm #1

We are trying to create an AR application that will track an image or a custom marker and will make a 3d animation model appear on the marker or image.  We will get the 3d models from our partners/customers and host it on our server.  Our questions are

  1. What kind of 3d models that metaio support?  Are there any specs that we should be aware of ?
  2. Is it possible to load the 3d model on the hosting server and pull that during runtime.
  3. Also how to we create our own customer marker (similar to the image)

Please  provide as some guidance, reference implementation or any other help

Thanks

Thulasi

AR application with 3d models

Hi,

concerning your first question (kind of 3D models), this depends if you plan to program natively on Android / iOS or to use the Unity3D extension;

in the former case (native approach), Vuforia relies on direct use of OpenGL ES, so you are free to use any 3D format you like, but you will need to code your own model loader, or otherwise integrate some existing 3D engines for Android or iOS;

on the other hand, if you plan to use Unity3D, then you will have access to any 3D model that Unity can load; about this, you can find more details here:

http://unity3d.com/unity/workflow/asset-workflow

concerning your second question (pulling models from server): yes, this is perfectly possible, and we have seen reports from other developers implementing such approach; however this is not a feature supported out-of-the-box by Vuforia

concerning your 3rd question (custom marker): you can do that by using Image Targets; see our Image Targets sample, and also our Dev Guide:

https://developer.vuforia.com/resources/dev-guide/image-targets

Hope this helps.
