Cylindrical tracking

I recently saw the cylindrical tracking demo on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqgmlkJcqA4How is is accomplished? Is it *true* 3D tracking? Or some kind of 2D pattern warped to be easily recognizable on a cylinder?
