Detecting circular/borderless shapes

Hi, I'm having a lot of problems trying to detect the tires of a car using vuforia.

I did some digging but I found surprisingly little about detecting circular or borderless shapes, so I was wondering if this is at all possible in Vuforia.

I can detect a wheel within a black frame perfectly, but remove the frame and I can't detect my target at all. Clearly this isn't acceptable for real life applications, I want to detect a car's wheel without a black frame around it, so could this be achieved?

Is there any way to detect an image that doesn't have borders? Or do I have to make some workaround using 3D Objects? How could this be handled?

Unfortunately I don't have any advice for you on that one. I think you're simply trying to do something that won't work out because real world tires do not make for good AR markers.

 

I haven't played around with the 3D object detection but the basic rules, high contrast and unique non-repeating shapes, would likely still be important.

Thanks for the reply. That page was indeed useful, and I got a better understanding of how this workd, but it doesn't really help me solve my problem.

Ok, now I understand why my images couldn't be detected. But I still don't know what to do to fix this problem and make them detectable. How can I detect a car's tire? Is there any trick I can use to make a tire be detectable, or should I use cilinder/object targets? I'm sure there must be a way to do this.

Circles or borderless shapes shouldn't really be any more of an issue than a normal marker as long as you have fulfilled some of the best practices for good marker design. I'm using literally dozens of circular markers in a major app and am having no issues with it. 

 

If you're trying to scan the tires the problem is likely that the tire image is too symetrical and doesn't have enough unique points on which Vuforia can read and detect the image.

 

Have you tried reviewing the feature detection via the Vuforia portal? Have you read through the best practice guide for creating markers? I found this guide extremely helpful when I was getting started: https://developer.vuforia.com/library/articles/Solution/Natural-Features-and-Ratings
