Help with tracking at large distances

May 21, 2016 - 4:57am #1

Hi,

I am having problems getting tracking to work anywhere except very close to the marker.  My marker is of A4 size and tracking is not happening beyond approximately 3 feet. Extended tracking has improved the situation somewhat but even with extended tracking after approx 5 feet, the model gets glitchy before disappearing completely. For my use case, I need the model to be augmented from 10 feet away. Is there any way to do that? Is there any other functionality that I can implement or some tweaks in current set up? I am using image tracking. The marker I am using is rated 5 star. Would making changes in code  to optimise it for my use case be possible? I am using Vuforia 5.5.9 with Unity 5.3.4.

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Extended tracking extracts features from the environment (what your camera sees in addition to the target) to continue the experience. Thus, what the camera sees also needs to be feature-rich, similar to your target. For example, if you only have white walls in the background, Extended tracking will not be as robust. Lighting (or lack thereof) can also negatively affect Extended tracking performance.

Thanks.

Yes, I have enabled it. But as mentioned, the problem is that the augmentation of the model is unsteady and inaccurate. The model moves towards the camera as I move away and also moves upward.

Hello,

Have you enabled extended tracking? This can help greatly when attempting to track targets at longer distances.

Thanks

Hi,

I've been able to overcome the problem of the model disappearing (it was due to the clipping plane setting in Unity). However, the problem I am facing now is that the augmentation is very unsteady at large distances. As I move away from the marker, the model seems to rotate upwards, then also translate upwards slightly. As I move further backwards, it then starts moving towards the camera. I've implemented a smoothing filter, but that hasn't helped with this. Is there any way to make the augmentation steady? Its really important for my use case that the augmentation be steady.

I am using a Nexus 5 for testing. The environment is pretty well lit and decent in terms of features.

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Detection and tracking performance are directly related to the quality of the input image. Thus, if environmental lighting and/or the device camera is poor, there may be issues.

What is the model name of the device you are using for you tests? Is the target well lit and free of specular reflections? For extended tracking, is your background also feature rich (like your 5-start target)?

Thanks.
