Vuforia support for desktop/standalone apps

February 11, 2013 - 5:35am #1

Hi,

I recently utilised Vuforia for an AR demo for iOS devices (via Unity 3D) and was pleasently surprised with its ease of use, realiabilty and robustness.

However its a real shame that currently it does not support publishing to standalone/desktop applications. This is really limiting as i've worked on a  number of AR projects in the past, with competitor SDK's that I'd much rather switch over to using Vuforia for. It would also make a great deal of sense in terms of being able to develop once but publish to Android, iOS and Mac/PC desktop, thus unifying all our AR development.

Is there any reason why you are not currently supporting desktop/standalone?

Using the Unity package its clear that the SDK itself works in a desktop environment, even if it is just the Unity editor, so it would seem like most of the work needed for desktop is already done?

Enabling publishing of standalone/desktop apps would pretty much make Vuforia a one stop shop and our prefered AR SDK.

So whats preventing this from happening?

Thanks

Does Vuforia use FastCV ?

Yes, and it's free :)

As for the other part of your question... not quite sure what the question is?

If it is about a standalone Desktop version, we have noted the requests and passed on to the Product Team.

thanks

I am not sure if FastCV features are used in Vuforia or if StudierStube (Vuforia) is used in FastCV.

I suppose it is possible to make a Unity plugin for StudierStube Tracker and make it behave nearly exactly like Vuforia to make migration quite easy. Will look into it.

Do you know if FastCV is also used in Vuforia, or it is more StudierStube, I also would not hesitate to buy 3000$ per-seat license.

I imagine StudierStube would not mind if Vuforia team could bring them new customers, and I will be happier because I like Vuforia and do not need to re-develope what is already there in it. It is a great product, interesting I also asked the same Wish List the moment I got serious about using it. With a proper x86 support I can do my debugging a lot easier if not anything else.

BTW, the unity editor has the x86 support so it should not be a license issue.

The StudierStube license file looks at your PC MAC address so I assumed it is on per-pc basis. I emailed the company to ask for clarification on this but they never got back to me. Perhpas you can try?

I was thinking about making a Unity plugin for StudierStube Tracker (desktop) but I am not sure if anyone would be willing to pay 3000USD for it. In any case, the functionality can be made nearly the same as with Vuforia so you still can have a pretty much seamless cross platform integration.

I agree that is really a pity that there is no cross platform solution for a reasonable price. In a way it is the same as with the history of mp3. Back in the day the codec license was expensive and only used in labs for research purposes. The naysayers just didn't see it coming.

Thanks for the info elecman. I keep meaning to check out your unified AR co-ord system in Unity ;)

I thought per seat licensing was for developers though not end users? If that were the case then $3,000 per seat for development with Vuforia would certainly be acceptable in my case, even if it meant requiring two seats to be purchased as its within the realms of the project budgets I work on. Obviously the initial cost just like Unity itself can be seen to be spread across the number of projects you create with it.

However you seem to suggest that it might be per-project cost, which of course is pretty much impractical and why i've had to discount many other promosing AR technologies. Paying for a technology is not an issue in itself, but frequently these per-project costs ( and even per-project per year!) simply blow the clients budget which is a real shame.

Indeed i've yet to find any AR solution that is multi-platform (iOS, Android, Mac & PC), that provides the level of robustness at a reasonable one-off per-seat price. I really don't understand it, as it would seem to be really hampering the growth in this sector.

Cheers

My guess of why Vuforia doesn't publish a desktop version despite the numerous requests is because of licensing issues.

Vuforia is based on StudierStube ES designed for mobile platforms. StudierStube tracker is designed for desktop environments but is very, very expensive at 3000USD per seat! Imagine publishing a program and charging 3050USD for it. That is not going to happen. So Vuforia probably has to pay a hefty fee to buy out the StudierStube license.

Not sure it this is the true reason, but I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with that.

On a side note, I had a play with the StudierStube desktop version and it is a pity that it is so expensive because it is without a shadow of doubt the best tracking software I have seen, blowing the competition out of the water. But at that price it will be confined to some labs here and there and will never see the light of day.

Hi,

My concern was that simply adding it to the wishlist was that it ends up being just another request in a bit of a blackhole.

Our wish-list is actually a real source of input and discussion for the Vuforia roamap; we use it as a convenience place to keep track of feature requests there.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I've added my request ot the wishlist. Though part of the reason for posting this as a new thread was to get some discussion going on since it does appear to be a widely desired feature, but nothing appears to have happened for quite some time in supporting it. My concern was that simply adding it to the wishlist was that it ends up being just another request in a bit of a blackhole.

I guess I was more interested in learning if there is any technical or legal reason that you can't support standalone apps, or perhaps as you are part of Qualcomm that this endevour is a bit of a 'loss leader' to promote mobile technologies which may use the Qualcomm's hardware? That would be understandable, though I would argue that if this were the case then not releasing a standalone version actually works against vuforia, since at some point I may have to find an AR solution that does support desktop as well as mobile.

I wouldn't even mind if there was an associated purchase cost in supporting standalones, though obviously vuforia has found much favour due to it being free and other solutions can have obscene costs invovled, which usually put them out of the budget range of the projects i'm invovled with.

I have to admit its a bit frustrating to find such a good technology/SDK/support that I know I could really make a great deal of use of outside of mobile, but can't.

Thanks.

Hi,

thank you for these inputs on Vuforia; we understand the potential value of what you suggest and we have seen a few more users asking for the same feature;

I would like to invite you to join them by publishing your request on our Forum wish-list, as we best keep track of these requests in there:
