Vumark/Image Tracking + Groundplane/MidAir Tracking

I have been able to get vumarks and image tracking working. What I really want is a very stable extended tracking/SLAM solution based on where that image is located. That is, I want an augmentation to appear on that image and when I look around and look back, it's where I left it. I have found that using positional tracking is not good enough - there is a lot of drift. 

I have also found that groundplane/midair tracking work very well. I look away and the target is where I last saw it - very stable!

What I need is a combination of the two of these approaches. Namely, this workflow:

  1. User finds a target
  2. Augmentation appears on this target
  3. Groundplane/Midair tracking takes over and keeps augmentations in place right on target
  4. If user finds a new target, reset state and go back to step 1 (i.e., show a new augmentation)

Has anyone been able to do this at all? I'm using Unity for iOS for what it's worth. I'm somewhat frustrated that this isn't included by design AND that when I try to do this, I can't access any methods of the anchor behaviours.

I ended up fixing this problem as well by following this guide: https://library.vuforia.com/articles/Training/vuforia-fusion-article.html and setting it to PLATFORM_SENSOR_FUSION for iOS so that ARKit is used.

I updated to Unity2019 + Vuforia 8.1.7 and the Vumark + extended tracking is much better. However, when I move side to side, I lose the tracking. Looking up and down vertically is good, however. It needs to do better spatial mapping.
