InternetClient capability and Security measures

April 30, 2020 - 6:32am #1

Hi,

I am a student at the University of South-Eastern Norway and I am writing a review of Vuforia's features for a client as a part of my bachelor's project.

The customer wants to use the HoloLens headset for object tracking and overlaying interactive AR content on a physical object. It is to be applied in an industrial process where security measures are very strict, and the device can not have an internet connection.

I see that Vuforia Features require InternetClient capability to be checked in Player Settings -> Publish Settings in Unity. Can someone explain what exactly this capability is used for and if it is possible to deploy an application without it? I am especially interested in Model Targets, Image Targets and VuMarks. (References are appreciated).

Kind regards, Alina

InternetClient capability and Security measures

Hi,

All Vuforia features, except Cloud Reco :) work without internet connection. However some require data to be uploaded to our servers for processing/creating the databases used by the SDK. This are 2 distinct things.

First is regarding functionality and second one is regarding "preparing" of the databases used by the SDK.

ex. Advanced Model Target, require the model to be uploaded to our server to be trained. After the training is finished, the db is available for download. We currently do not provide any local training capabilites.

Also Vuforia SDK will try to connect to the internet, basically it "phones" home from time to time to provide statistics and check if there are new device profiles.

Hope it helps.
