Slow Tracking of Moving Markers with Vuforia and Unity

May 9, 2017 - 2:37pm #1

Hello,

I'm currently designing an application for the Hololens, with Unity, to track a moving object with a marker. On webcams/mobile, the tracking of this target(both image marker and VuMark) is mostly stable and quick to respond. However, when using the Hololens, there is a noticeable lag of a third of a second or more before the object realigns properly. Furthermore, the tracking and displayed object looks rather jittery. Is this due to the hardware of the Hololens itself, Unity, Vuforia's own algorithms, a mix of these, or something else entirely? Alternatively, are there any suggestions on how to improve the speed and accuracy of the tracking?

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I've had issues where the extended tracking of moving markers sometimes gets "stuck" if a user idles for around 2 seconds or more and has a difficult time waking up. I will test it again, however.

Because you mentioned that the current delay in repositioning is due to Vuforia's integration with Hololens' SDK, do you have any timetable on when an update that will address this issue will be released? When using a webcam texture to test what hololens was seeing vs what I was doing, I saw a slight delay in the texture updating. Is the issue that the hololens cameras are not sending images quickly enough to the program?

Hello,

The repositioning "lag" you're observing is related to the current state of Vuforia's integration with HoloLens in SDK 6.2. We're working closely with the HL team to improve Vuforia's performance on the platform in the future.

The augmentation jitter you're observing can have several sources, such as: the quality of the Image Target being used, environmental factors (lighting, spectral reflections) and quality of the camera frames being submitted to the Vuforia SDK. My suggestion to you is to enable Vuforia's Extended Tracking such that HL's spacial tracker can overcome current limitations and provide the best possible experience.

Thanks.
