Video Recording and Photo taking not working with Hololens

October 27, 2016 - 10:43am #1

Recently we developed an app using Vuforia with Hololens. We want to take a photo and record a video when the app is running. We are pressing both volume buttons down to take a photo and to record a video of the app we are using Cortana's voice commands . We have enabled all capabilities in the build settings but nothing seems to work..

Hi !

Old discussion but still alive !

My experience is that while running a Vuforia app, without killing the recognition, you can record a video from MRC (or easier with the Microsoft Hololens app from windows 10 store!) but you can NOT take a photo the same way. Which I do not really understand since a video is plenty of photos...

You can take photos, videos and live stream whilst you are using an app build with vuforia. You just have to stop the camera instance first whilst can be re-enabled at a later date. But once you are tracking everything you need within the scene everything is passed over to the hololens (extended tracking) anyway so vuforia tracking is no longer needed.

I guess that the Vuforia does not support taking photos in HoloLens.

Hello,

Here is my experience with camera access on HL while running Vuforia:

  1. You can record videos of Vuforia apps running on HoloLens. Note that for this to work, the app running Vuforia must be started *before* you started to record with HL’s MRC. If you start recording first, the video will abruptly stop once Vuforia gets access to the HL camera.
  2. You *cannot* do MRC Live preview while a Vuforia app is running in any case. If you try to start Live preview while a Vuforia-based app is running on HL, you will get an error in MRC. If you try to start a Vuforia-based app while Live preview is running, the app will not start.

The limitations above are related to real-time camera access for apps running on the HL. In order to guarantee optimal detection and tracking performance, Vuforia is granted sole access to the live camera feed. This is similar to other platforms that we support, such as Android and iOS. You can see that it also works the other way around for apps that do not run Vuforia. The Live preview app requires real-time camera access, so while it is running Vuforia is blocked from accessing the camera.

Thanks

I remember reading in the docs of Hololens that only one app can have access to the camera.

Since Vuforia might already access the camera, it might not be possible to record anything else.

I experienced the same thing. I found that using the Hololens app (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/microsoft-hololens/9nblggh4qwnx) I was able to start and stop video recording. I don't know why this is different from asking Cortana to record a video, but apparently it is.
