Apple Store rejects app using ground plane due to missing AR markers

September 7, 2018 - 10:51am #1

Hi,

we have an app that we would like to publish on iOS, but Apple keeps rejecting it because we don't provide any AR or QR markers.

The app (developed in Unity 2018.2) uses Vuforia only for ground plane detection, so no markers are needed. Does anyone know how to get around this issue? Apple doesn't give us much information about the problem.

Thanks for your help.

P.S.:

Here's the message they provide with the rejected submission:

Guideline 4.2 - Design - Minimum Functionality

We noticed that your app includes an AR or QR scanner but does not include any additional content or functionality unless the user has access to the AR marker or QR code. While we understand that your app displays additional content when an AR marker or QR code is scanned, to users who do not have access to the AR markers or QR codes, your app only appears to display a camera view.

Next Steps

We encourage you to provide your users with additional content in your app, including directions on how to use your app and information on how to obtain any necessary AR markers or QR codes.

To ensure users have the best experience, apps should provide valuable utility or entertainment, draw people in by offering compelling capabilities or content, or enable people to do something they couldn't do before or in a way they couldn't do it before.

Are you able to get in contact with anyone at Apple to learn more about this? We've never encountered a scenario where someone's app is getting rejected for this reason when using Ground Plane. We're happy to dig into the issue and help you resolve it, but we need some more context as to what specifically is causing this to be rejected.

Thanks,

We do tell it to the user on the first run in form of a pop-up. We also explicitly tell to the testers that they dont need any AR markers to use the app. It seems that it gets rejected automatically or those testers don't know what they are doing :D.

Hello Legacycz,

We've had developers encounter this sort of issue before when they don't include a way for their users to access the markers without purchasing something outside the app (such as a book). If your app is only using Ground Plane, it might be worth reviewing your UI/UX to make sure it is clear to the Apple review team that they do not require a marker in order to initiate the AR experience in your app.

Thanks,
