App Crash On Some Unity Android Devices

June 9, 2015 - 5:19am #1

Vuforia SDK Version: 4.2.3 -
Description with steps to reproduce:

Hi,

We currently have an app on the google play store that crashes on some android devices such as the Hudl2.

We are using Unity 5 and the latest vuforia.

You click to start the app and immediately receive a 'Unfortunately AliveLab has stopped' message. I have tried created an empty unity app and loading that which works fine. As soon as I import the latest Vuforia however, it then crashes. I don't even have to put any of the vuforia prefabs in the scene and it will crash on some devices every single time.

The android store bug report is as follows:

java.lang.Error: FATAL EXCEPTION [UnityMain]

This is causing us a real problem as we are having to refund the physical product which goes alongside the app. Any help is appreciated.

Many Thanks

I already have identified the problem, after a lot of test, the plugin responsable for all crashs is Google Cardboard SDK to Unity3D.

Thanks for the information.

Hi Alessandro,

I know about that.

I send some devices that the app is crashing.

I already have identified the problem, after a lot of test, the plugin responsable for all crashs is Google Cardboard SDK to Unity3D.
And theres some relations with Atom processor.

The reason by crash of devices that don't have Intel processor were another bugs.

I already reported the bug to Google Cardboard team, and we are waiting for a update to tix this issue.
We can't do nothing about this right now :(

Thanks for try to help me.

Hi tiagoam,

you mentioned a range of devices and you mention the Intel Atom CPU; however, are you sure they all have that CPU ?

for example, if I google the Samsung Galaxy Tab4 7.0, I get the following specs:

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_4_7_0_3g-6250.php

and according to those specs, the CPU is a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7, not an Intel Atom.

Similar results for some of the other devices.

Second point: it's hard to say if it's Vuforia issue of an app-level issue, without checking the device logs.  Ideally we would need some more detailed information for each device (or at least for some of them), as described here:

https://developer.vuforia.com/forum/device-support/how-report-device-issue

I have the same problem here.

Galaxy Tab4 7.0 (degaswifidtv) Android 4.4
Galaxy Tab4 7.0 (degasltespr) Android 4.4
Galaxy Tab 3 Lite (goyawifi)  Android 4.2
Galaxy Tab 3 Lite (goyawifi)  Android 4.2
Galaxy Tab3 Lite (goyawifi)  Android 4.2
Galaxy Tab Plus 7.0 (goyave3gsea) Android 4.4
Galaxy Ace Style (heatqlte) Android 4.4
Moto E (condor_udstv) Android 4.4
Moto E (condor_umts) Android 4.4
MOTO E (surnia_uds) Android 5.0
TOUCH 4015X (Yaris35_GSM) Android 4.2

In my research, i think this crash happens because the Intel Atom processor.

"It is a crash on app startup that will only happen on *some* Android devices having an Intel Atom x86 CPU.  This crash will never happen on a device having an ARM CPU.  I say *some* because Google and Intel have confirmed this to be a bug in very particular versions of Intel's "libhoudini.so" library.  This is why some Intel Android devices may run your app fine, but may later break when you do an OS update (although Intel has supposedly fixed this bug now, meaning later Android updates should fix this too).  You can see the official bug report on Google's issue tracker via the link below where you can see Google and Intel discussing this."
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=77387

I am using Amazon AWS Device Farm to test in devices that I don't have here, but keep crash when the vuforia start.

I am using Cardboard sdk too, so I am still testing to know what is the real problem.

When someone fix this issue, will be great, because our score in the Google Play is falling down very very fast, and we have the game featured by Google :(

Thanks

OK, for the moment we will focus on the Hudl 2 device; I would have one more question: have you tried to build with Unity 5.0.3 or 5.0.3 patch p1 ?

https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive

https://unity3d.com/unity/qa/patch-releases

Unity 5.0.1 had some issues with Vuforia 4.2.3, as reported in other threads (e.g. here), which have been solved with Unity 5.0.3.

I wonder if that Unity version would also make your crash disappear.

I only have the Hudl 2 to hand at the moment. The model number just shows as Hudl 2

The android version is 4.4.2

And the steps to recreate are import vuforia into a blank unity 5 project. Put an AR camera and image target into a fresh scene and export that scene. This will cause the crash.

Thanks

Hi,

Could you provide exact model number of each device ?

The complete model number can be found in the device Settings (usually under Settings > About device) and Android version of each device ?

Also, can you confirm that it is sufficient to import the Vuforia 4.2.3 unity package into a new Unity project to reproduce this bug on any of those devices ? or are there additional specific steps involved ?

Hi AllesandroB,

The device model is Pegatron Hudl 2 and it is running android 4.4

We have even tried creating a project and just importing vuforia into it in Unity without doing anything else and that causes it to crash.

We have over 50 reports of this now.

Thanks

Could you provide the following details:

- exact Model number of the device

- Android OS version

- can you reproduce the crash using one of the Vuforia Samples ?
