AR Camera gets flipped after orientation changes

November 1, 2017 - 3:01pm #1

Vuforia SDK Version: Vuforia 6.5 bundled with Unity 2017.2 -

Description with steps to reproduce: I have a project built natively (Objective-C and Swift) in Xcode and have Unity embedded in a UIView within the project. Everything works fine with Unity, and Vuforia works and tracks targets correctly. However, when the device is rotated counterclockwise (i.e. the home button is on the right) or upside down, Vuforia flips the video feed.

If it is rotated back to portrait, the camera feed is still upside down. Rotating it the other way (i.e. the home button is on the left) can fix this until it is rotated counterclockwise again. Everything else in unity (e.g. screen-space UI elements, or things not based on Vuforia's tracking) works fine and is not upside down, it is ONLY Vuforia.

In addition, this only occurs on iOS 11.0-11.1. This issue does not occur on iOS 10.x. -

Development OS (Mac OS X, Windows, Linux): Mac OS X -

Mobile OS and Version: iOS 11.0-11.1 -

Mobile Device Manufacturer and Model name: Apple iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 8 Plus -

Do the Vuforia Sample Applications show the same behavior?:

Hey, I wanted to pop in and provide an update here. This is a known issue with iOS 11 and Unity (mentioned in our release notes https://library.vuforia.com/articles/Release_Notes/Vuforia-SDK-Release-Notes.html).

We have filed the bug with Unity and they have fixed it for 2018.1, with plans to backport the fix. I will update this thread in the future when more information is available.

Apologies for the inconvenience in the meantime,

Vuforia Support

I have a similar problem with iOS 11, but only on my iPhone 7, not on my iPad.

It happens that the video background is flipped upside down at random. Mostly this happens if the app is started multiple times or if another (!) Vuforia-enabled app has been started before.

I have multiple apps based on the very same code base, only differing in the 3D model that is applied to the physical object. If I start app A, it may work pretty well, but if I try to start app B, the video is upside-down there. Sometimes it's the other way around, i.e. if I start app A, the video is flipped, but if I start app B, its video is just ok.

So far, I have no clue what might cause this. It's quite annoying, as the problem persists until the device is being rebooted. Then, sometimes, everything works as expected. Until next time I close and re-open the app or switch between apps.

BTW: Is it possible somehow to restrict a Vuforia app to only a specific device rotation, let's say 'landscape right'? If I set this setting in Xcode, it is simply ignored.

Hello TaggRyan,

Are you able to reproduce this issue with the sample apps?

Thanks,
