License for educational purpose

January 18, 2019 - 9:04am #1

Hi,

We are working on an AR application to assist the orientation progress of a university library. The application is not commercial and only use for educational purpose, but we would like to distribute it to students and deploy it to google play if possible. Do we need to have a Classic License whenever we want to deploy it, no matter it is commercial or not? On the other hand, does it mean that if we are not deploying the application to google play or app store, we are allowed to distribute it by using a Developer License?

Besides, we found that in the FAQ, it is mentioned that "You can also deploy Unity apps that take advantage of our Ground Plane, Device Tracker and Stereo Rendering features for free without a License Key.", does it mean that we can just deploy it as a Unity application if we do not embed a Vuforia license key in our application?

Thank you so much for your kind help.

My understanding is that an app that is only for consumer use and has less than 1,000 app installs can be distributed in app stores with a Development license. A paid license is required for a Consumer app with more than 1,000 installs. This is the total number of app installs across any/all platforms supported by Vuforia.

For more information, please review our developer agreement: https://developer.vuforia.com/legal/vuforia-developer-agreement

The standard, out-of-the-box offering of Vuforia Engine SDK in Unity allows for app deployment without a Vuforia License. This out-of-the-box offering in Unity does utilize the Ground Plane, Device Tracker and Stereo Rendering features but does not support customization features (such as custom Targets). In order to develop in Unity and utilize the full feature set of Vuforia Engine, a Vuforia License is required. In order to deploy an app using the full feature set of Vuforia Engine, a paid license is required. Please see the license pricing for more information.

We'll look to update the language in our documentation for improved clarity.

Thanks,

Vuforia Engine Support
