New Basic License Questions

May 16, 2019 - 2:20pm #1

Just saw Classic license is going away and is replaced with Basic.  If I decide to not pay the following year, will the application cease to function?  Or are the yearly payments just a license for us to always use the new features of the engine?

If I publish 30 applications, I have to pay $ 15,120? this must be a joke. It is inevitable to direct all developers to other platforms.

They don't want to answer. I asked this other times, but they are vague.

I think that they're pumping the license prizes until they can. Google and Apple are offering AR solutions for free, and they're growing very fast. Vuforia is still, it offers the same technology it offered when they arrived in PTC from Qualcomm.

We were about to buy a few Classic licenses for future apps and then I realized that ever since v7 the Classic license does not allow major version updates according to the license.

I don't believe this was ever enforced though.  Are you ever planning on enforcing the official license with regard to updates for Classic plans?

For example, if I buy several Classics now, will I be able to use Vuforia 9 when it comes out?

If we can't, it's definitely time to look elsewhere.

I can't tell why Vuforia is not offering one-pay licenses anymore with so many developers using this SDK.

I guess a lot of these developers will be in a position similar to ours, dedicated to develop AR apps to small/medium companies which will reject paying a subscription for a small app and therefore rejecting to work with us.

It happened before (fortunately Vuforia retracted of making that choice listening to developers complains), and it's happening again, so it might be the time to move to other solutions in the market.

Hello Alyanna,

We are very interested by the question of "areavisuale" :

"I have just bought a Classic License, I'm using Unity. Normally Unity updates Vuforia Engine to the last version, what will happen when it updates to Vuforia 9.0?"

When we take a look to the current license developer agreement, the "2.3. Classic License" section says : "A Classic License does not include Software Updates."

So.... Does it mean we will be all blocked to Vuforia 8 with our old licenses or we will continue to have the possibily to upgrade to next releases ???

Same question for Vuforia AR applications developped with Unity... Now than Vuforia is included into the Unity, does it mean we couldn't use next Unity Editor releases ?

It can be a very big problem to be blocked in a Vuforia version or in a Unity version for example when new OS version are released (Example : iOS 13, Android 11 etc...).

Dear Alyanna, you haven’t answered to me.

This is not the first time I ask to Vuforia forum the same question without receive answer.

I need to know what will happen with a Classic license when Vuforia will update its Unity plugin to the next 9.0 release.

The fact that you update the plugin doesn’t mean that I cannot use it the previous version anymore, you need to clarify!

Hi Vertexlit,

A Basic license key will need to be purchased for each application developed and will include Vuforia Engine software updates. Vuforia currently doesn't have plans to offer another one-pay license.

Please let me know if you have any other question.

Thanks,

Alyanna

Hi SpudRat3,

Happy to help answer these questions.

Any Classic license you have purchased will not change. We will continue to adhere to the terms of that license. You will not be forced to upgrade to a subscription. The Classic license will continue to stay a purchase option until May 29th. After this date, the Classic license will no longer be an option and will be replaced with the Basic license. Again, developers will only be paying a subscription if they choose to purchase a Basic license once it's available. The Basic license will be charged annually from the date it is purchased.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or need any further clarification on the above.

Thanks,

Alyanna

Hey dpizzle,

If you currently have a Classic license nothing will be changing. It will continue to work per the terms of the Vuforia Developer agreement and not change to a subscription. The Classic license option will be going away on May 29th and replaced with the Basic license.

If you were to buy a Basic license for your next application and not pay the subscription, the Vuforia Engine functionality within that license would cease to function.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Alyanna

Agreed. We have based our agreements with our current customers on the Classic license. This will kill some of those relationships. On the other hand, I am certainly surprised by the small number of posts in this thread. Must be OK with everyone else, eh?

I predict that a subscription based licensening will be highly unpopular with our customers. This will more or less limit app life time to one year.

Another question that the new pricing plan does not explain properly is:

Will we have to pay annually, per each app, or just by paying annually we can use the same license among different apps.

I believe it's the first option, 504$ per year/per app, definitely killed my business since we develop AR apps for different companies and they do not expect to pay a subscription.

I'd really appreciate if Vuforia said something about this and if they will also release a one-pay license as it is now.

There is always so much confusion in your licenses...

I have just bought a Classic License, I'm using Unity. Normally Unity updates Vuforia Engine to the last version, what will happen when it updates to Vuforia 9.0?

I'm not interested in the new features you'll give with the next version, but I pretend to continue to build my app with a supported Vuforia version.

I need some clarifications

We are wondering about this, too. The announcement leaves some questions up in the air. We have many.

If we have an app currently released under the Classic license, will we have to start paying annual fees to keep this license active? When are they first due? A year from when we bought the license? I year from now? May 29? A year from May 29?

If the answer is no, and our app is grandfathered under the Classic license, what happens if we upgrade it? Does that trigger a conversion to the Basic License? CAN we upgrade it?

If the answer to the above is no, we can update the app without triggering annual fees, should we be buying licenses now (before May 29) for apps now in development, in order to avoid the annual license fees? These are business questions that affect our relationships with our clients, who are not expecting to have to start paying an annual fee for apps we've already developed for them.Any additional clarifications would be most helpful.
