Vuforia not free from 4.0?

January 23, 2015 - 6:32pm #35

Is User-defined target considered as a kind of image taget, i.e. does the recognition event counts 1 reco?

I think user-defined target doesn't have a specific target and can't be used in branding. It's usually for free apps. Charging on it would kill this kind of apps.

I don't think there is a direct relationship between the price you charge for your published App (e.g. on the App Store) and the pricing scheme of your Vuforia plan.

To be sure however, you can send an inquiry to our sales team:

Hi, regarding:

Quote:

2. The pricing is per application title (an application title can have android and iOS application versions)

What if the app/game title is released for free (not even with adds/inapps)?

Vuforia not free from 4.0?

That is the license during the Beta period, I am figuring out that under the release version, the terms that, apply are the ones of the latest billing information, that explain that under developer program you can publicy the app, with the watermark and under 2 more conditions, no limit for device recognition, 1000 recos under cloud recognition, I asume that the app could be a commercial ones, but with the restrictions above mentioned. Is it correct?

The beta licensing page say Developer is - For app development and limited deployment with watermark

I dont know what is that limited deployment, but usually , as metaio does they should allow publishing with watermark, so we are spreading the name of vuforia.

Please see attachment of watermark of vuforia and metaio, for those who havent tested with 4

Then, with the watermark screen, (developer plan), we can create apps, and deploy them even with a commercial use?

Thanks AlessandroB, i am aware of the emulation, but the performance was less due to emulation. when i tried to compile to FAT(x86 and ARM) the app crashed and so forced to use ARM only build. So project containing vuforia are ARM only.

Qualcomm and Intel are chipset rivals so asking intel compatibility may be like asking apple to put apk support on iOS :)

Please be aware that the dates for 64bit support are tentative and may change.

Vuforia not free from 4.0?

Vuforia 4.0 will come with "arm" architecture support, so it will not include .so (library) files specifically for the x86 architecture. However, intel-x86 based devices can run "arm-based" apps using arm emulation. This is already the case with Vuforia 3.0.

Thanks stan i misread ans january 15

Thanks Allesandro for pointing this out 64bit matter.

Another question is about Android. Now Unity have added Intel Binary support, but the Vuforia .so files are compiled for ARM only. For vuforia 4.0 will it have x86 .so files?

Without that i think its impossible to compile a vuforia project to suit intel android tablets

Just to answer gfxguru 's previous comment:

... so there is no need of vuforia 3 to have life up to june. From February Appstore needs 64bit builds, so its ending there if you are targeting iOS. ...

Note that existing Apps (e.g. Apps developed with Vuforia 3.0 for example, and that have already been submitted to the App Store) can still be "updated" in the App Store without incurring in the 64-bit requirement until June 2015. as announced in the Apple website on December 17, 2014, here:

I don't think it's gonna be one day. I guess End of Jan'15 means end of January 2015 so basically together with the live version 4.0 comming out. So thrilling up to the very end ;o)

As the subscription will be individual per each app I want to ask whether offline dataset will be also tight to licence key. Can we share same dataset across apps or we will have to generate its own dataset for each app?

Thanks

Stan

This is the reply i got for people that may be interested

Hi Benjamin,

Thanks for your interest in Vuforia.

To answer your questions -

1. We will be releasing the pricing of Vuforia 4.0 at the end of this month - January'15

2. The pricing is per application title (an application title can have android and iOS application versions)

3. The commercial release of  the native iOS Vuforia 4.0 SDK will be 64 bit compatible (releasing end of Jan'15). The Unity iOS Vuforia 4.0 extension will be 64 bit compatible (releasing end of Feb'15). Vuforia 3.0 will not be 64 bit compatible.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Vuforia Support

Vuforia not free from 4.0?

The new terms should be clarified ASAP.

And the device database should not bind with a specific app, why add limitations to this great AR SDK? I do not understand the purpose.

Hi All

Hope you all had a good xmas.

So i come to work on monday and look on here for any updates and great news SDK 4.0 is out great :)

Well not so great it turns out, from what i can tell there still is no ARM64 support and now they have added a water mark with no way of getting rid of it on the free SDK. Ok great well we can just upgrade to a pro version i hear you say, well no as there is no plans in place yet.I am not sure why this has been released yet when half the information is missing seems it was done in a rush.

I think if this is the case then vuforia will loose allot of developers as there is much more AR SDK's out there that you can pay for that can do allot more then vuforia.

vuforia is a great SDK i wish they could keep us up to date a bit more and let us know when they are going to spring big changes like this on us.

I have to admit I was always amazed that a cool AR tool such as Vuforia was for free and has opened up a whole new way of developing for me, but all with free apps, no profit in it as apps will always be free.

No if the goal posts have chnaged and an unrealistic pricing plan is being set as mandatory that kill is and is a real real shame!

This is a bad Christmas indeed, please reconsider Qualcomm....

Vuforia not free from 4.0?

No more information available?
Price of License?
I think that a product shouldn't be updated from Free to a Payment one that way, there are many people that is using Vuforia because of the possibility of the Device Database, let's say "amateur apps" that in 99% cases only use the Image Target feature, and in most cases are free or like Chenoabere says, is sold as a 100$ app.
For me the most important thing is to establish the price of the License, not a "bleeding" monthly fee, and try cover all the developers necessities, from Amateur to Enterprise. And need to be done quickly in order to explore the other possibilities out there, this is a 400+ views topic and no word from Qualcomm, I think there are many people waiting to take a decision.

Regards.

Vuforia not free from 4.0?

I am totally lost... Have just read about the new license management and can`t believe that device database need (under the 4.0 version) to be paid as a monthly fee, using the last information available from cloud reco, let`s say, 99$\mo, now imagine that a simple app is sold at 100$, from the 2nd month I need to put my own money there to maintain it. 1200$\ year for a 100$ app, nice business...

If Qualcomm wants to earn money, should take into account that many developers has no option for paying the fees, looking directly to the platform I use, Unity, the FREE version is available for everyone (with its limitations) until you reach 100.000$. Also you have the option for paying monthly fee, or buy the license for the PRO version.

Then, I think that new options (FREE basic features vs PRO premium features) should be available, and the option for buying a PRO license, not only monthly fees.

Anyway, someone need to clarify this new license management to evaluate as soon as possible this new mandatory fees\prices imposed and its consistent profitability for future projects.

Thanks in advance.

Not so much information from the License Team Support. See below.

"Thank you for contacting us about your licensing concerns with regards to Vuforia. The Vuforia SDK is available at no charge to download, develop and publish your application! All that we ask is that you make awesome applications and adhere to the terms of our licensing agreement.

If you are interested in developing an application using Vuforia’s Cloud Recognition Service, separate usage terms may apply.

Thanks again,
The Vuforia Support Team"

Yep, what is it different to Vuforia 4? Is there limitation to deploy to stores? I've seen only watermak added in free program. Ah ok I guess you mean that you must upgrade when you are over 10k recos a month? that's true, but this limit is quite ok I guess. depends on price of paid program.

Vuforia not free from 4.0?

What it makes problematic is the counting on device database. Its too much of a restriction.

I had a few long term projects, that uses vuforia and my question is the life span of the vuforia 3 version.

Will it be there with its Target Manager ? or will be wiped out? without its target manager there is nothing we can do

"For app development and limited deployment with watermark"

This is Metaio way

Stan , But metaio doesnt have any limitation in deployment , we can even publish it to appstore, but with watermark.

But the only that needed to be free is the normal image based tracking, i understand the R&D of 3d and such great features and should be charged. But for small developers like me,its hurting.

Vuforia not free from 4.0?

December 18, 2014 - 12:10am #5

I understand why we have to pay for cloud reco, its perfectly valid as it requires to run complex infrastructure.

While it's hurting I still could understand if app is succesful there would be a charge (over 10k recos a month)

But this is most worrying part. The note on free developer program

"For app development and limited deployment with watermark"

This is Metaio way... This effectively means no production app for free any more for anyone.

It is a big shame as Vuforia was the only good quality free SDK on the market for both iOS and Android for offline use.

Lets see what price gonna be but it is definitelly bad christmas present ;o|

Moved to where?

As gfxguru said, there is no posibility for developing with Vuforia for free anymore since 4.0 version is going to be released? I think that basic features should remains as free, and premium features require the paid version... but it's only an opinion.

Could be used the 3.0.9 version as free along the time?

Do you have any futher information?

i saw the licence manager page and it is per app :

Professional Plan

For apps with <10,000 recos/month across device and cloud databases

So vuforia is charging for every app deployment and also its counting the recos of device database?
