Do model targets support textures?

December 20, 2017 - 6:09am #1

Are model targets supposed to only contain a grey default material and detect purely by shape, or is there a way to add a texture to detect for example a specificly patterned shape?

Hello aletoivonen,

For best results, it is recommended that the CAD model used to generate the target accurately reflects the texturing of the physical model. While the exact colors of the texture on the CAD model are not important, the differences in textures should be represented. In your case, if the physical object has a patterned shape that is a different color/texture from the rest of the object, you should include this in your model data.

As pflamant mentioned from the documentation, a single textured/colored model can work, but is not ideal.

Please note that the textures of the model need to be either png or jpg format.

Thanks,

Hi,

As stated in the documentation of the Model Target Generator User Guide: "Ideally the models are in a color similar to the objects being tracked. However, it is possible to use an all-black model to track a colored object. In general, the model should be as close to the real object as possible in order to get the best detection tracking performance."  (https://library.vuforia.com/articles/Solution/model-target-generator-user-guide.html)

So I think you can add your texture in a 3D edition program (like Blender) and then import your file to the Mode Target Generator Tool.
