Model Target and Hololens

September 25, 2018 - 10:36am #1

Has anyone had any luck getting a stable Model target to appear in the hololens?

I have no issue getting the model to appear but when i move around the object it appears to bounce slightly around. (not enough to leave view but enough to look like its jumping). This is a medium size object so I dont think it is too small (18.5in, 27.5in, 11.8in).

At this point, I have a boss who keeps telling me how easy and simple this should be and have the model overlay the real world object 100% with no bouncing or misalignment. If someone can give any advice or point me in a direction of something that will work i would be greatly appreciated.

For the record, I have tried a few other options as well.

1. Manually placing the object with gestures (Boss deemed this too hard and time-consuming)

2. Placeholder objects with the main subject being placed in between (again placing the placeholder objects was too hard)

3. Image targets - worked well enough but having to keep the image in view was deemed unacceptable and the smallest image i could get to pick up was 2in by 3in. (also unacceptable).

Any help or advice would mean the world to me. Thank you for your time.

Hello @AvionVrImmersion,

Not a problem - had to rattle my head a bit to recall the thread.

Here's some additional tips from our investigation of similar issues:

  • There is an inherent limitation in how accurate HoloLens can track a Model target on HoloLens, which, based on our observations, can be in the order of +/- half centimeter (roughly a quarter of an inch)
  • It is VERY important to keep the Model and rendering complexity to as low as possible, so to guarantee a constant/stable 60 FPS rendering, which seems to be crucial to minimize wobbling/shaking/jitter
  • Some expedients to optimize this are:
    • Keep model triangle count well below 100K triangles (prefearrably under 50K triangles)
    • Set the light settings to "Mixed" or "Baked" (do not use "Realtime")
    • Use simple shaders (e.g. "Mobile/VertexLit" for example)

@medabit

I am sorry I didn't subscribe to this thread so I didn't see your reply until today.

I just got through trying your suggestion and I am afraid I didn't notice too much difference.

Just so it is know I used Unity 2018.1.6f1 + Vuforia 7.1.35

I Enabled "Depth Buffer Sharing Enable tried both 16bit and 24bit.

At this point I agree with the thread you linked that it is something to do with the HoloLens or Unity.  In the past couple of weeks I tried the MRTK poster calibration with a QR code, and while it was able to line up perfectly it also had the drifting problem.

Hello @AvionVrImmersion,

We've been able to replicate your observation with Model Targets on HoloLens and are currently investigating further. Unclear if this is a regression in Vuforia or Unity.

If you're still willing to try and move forward (and make the boss happy), please try the following:

  • Vuforia 7.1 + Unity2018.1 (my records shows that 2018.1.6f1 and greater have SDK 7.1.X  - just do not upgrade.
    • NOTE: There is an issue with the Unity Asset store where it may download the wrong version of the HoloLens sample. Please be aware of possible compatibility issues
  • Enable "Depth Buffer Sharing Enabled" setting

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Hello,

@CrackerHackerMasterChecker - I just attempted with 2018.2.11 upgraded to 7.5.26 (our most recent release). Using the Vuforia Digital Eyewear Unity sample, I created a ModelTarget prefab in the 2-Eyewear scene, and then configured the Device Config = HoloLens. I did not see an error.

@AvionVrImmersion - Let me take a look and post back on my observations.

Thanks,

I am using Vuforia 7.5 and Unity 2018 .2.11f1.

Hello,

Which version of Vuforia are you using? Model Targets have been supported on HoloLens for the last couple of Vuforia releases, per my recollection.

Hello, I have the same issue. In Vuforio Configuration, when setting Device Type to "Digital Eyewear", Unity warns me "Model Targets are not supported by Digital Eyewear". Does this include Hololens?
