Model target not recognized

Hello,

I've been trying to use model targets to track a guitar using a 3d model of a guitar I found online. I'm not sure if this particular 3d model would work but I don't have any 3d scanners lying around to make a 3d model of my guitar, so I used a model online that closely resembles my guitar. Is it possible to use a pre-existing 3d model that someone else created as my model target or do I have to create my own? When I use vuforia play mode to test, nothing appears over my guitar. I'll post a screenshot of my unity page to see if I'm doing something wrong. Chances are I am because I'm relatively new to vuforia and ar in general. Thanks a lot.

Hello bflynn882,

If the guitar model you found online doesn't have the exact same geometry that your physical guitar has, you may have issues (or just not be able to) detect the guitar.

Something you can try is to zoom your guide view in on a portion of the model that is identical to your physical guitar so that only that portion is used in the detection. Just be sure that this portion of the model contains sufficient geometry.

Also, make sure the texturing of the digital model matches the texturing of your physical model. If the physical model isn't a single texture, the digital model needs to reflect this.

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm not able to detect this object (please see the attachment) using Vuforia model target detection. I tried using a Pro license Key as well..it doesn't detect it. What could possibly be the problem? Is this model geometry not complex enough for detection? Do I need a more complex geometry. What would be a quick test case to check if model detection is working and that the geometry is a problem?

Does the texture on the model need to match the real object look as well?

I'm using Unity 2018.1.6f1

Thanks

Hello christianSVR,

The object in your image is not a strong object for the Model Target feature. There is very limited geometry here and it is almost entirely rounded parts with very limited hard edges. The following article has additional information about aspects of models that will be more successful for the Model Targets feature: https://library.vuforia.com/articles/Solution/model-targets-user-guide.html

The texture of the model should reflect any texturing the physical model has. The colors don't have to be exactly the same, but if there is only a single color/texture on the physical object, there should only be one on the physical.

The quickest way to test your model would be to load it into the test app (available on the Downloads page) or in the sample app and then attempt to detect your object. If you are unable to detect it, it is either due to the guideview or the geometry.

Thanks,

Vuforia Support

Hello,

Thank you so much for the reply! I tried using a 'Stronger' object with better lighting and it works really well !

Thanks
