Any New leads on Zoom in Functionality?

October 28, 2019 - 11:02am #1

Google led me to a couple of posts from back in 2014-2016 and the general consensus was that Vuforia did not support Zoom in functionality. Have any changes been made with regards to that?

If not anyone got any nifty solutions (other than walking closer to the target/making target bigger)?

Hi,

I would want to focus on the issue that you are facing, image targets not being recognized from 2-3 feet.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if your image will not detect:

  1. Import the dataset into Unity: Assets->Import Package->Custom Package...
  2. Select the dataset in the ImageTarget prefab: ImageTarget->Image Target Behaviour (Script)->Type = Predefined, select Database and Image Target you want to be detected/tracked
  3. Be sure that when building your app, you have selected the scene with the ARCamera+ImageTarget prefab
  4. Always print the image that was uploaded to the portal to the exact same aspect ratio. Any stretching or altering of the image will cause it not to be detected. Some printers default to "stretch to fit", which can change the aspect ratio.
  5. Check the size values you are using when uploading Targets to the Vuforia Target Manager. Note there is specific language used in the dialogue box that says Vuforia uses meters as the default unit scale. Incorrect target sizes could affect either our detection/tracking algorithm, or the augmentation in that it so large that it cannot be viewed because it extends beyond the clipping plane.
  6. Review ADB logs to see if Vuforia detects and tracks the target. If the target is being tracked but the augmentation cannot be seen, this could indicate an issue with the clipping plane.

Note that the console message "trackable lost" does not indicate that something is wrong.

Thank you.

Ah, I see that makes sense. The issue I'm facing right now is that the app isn't able to recognize image targets that are 2-3 ft away. I could enlarge the size of the target but I would like to avoid that as the target would be a hindrance to the rest of the display.

Would you mind guiding me as to how I can go about adding in a zoom function, I'd like to test it out to see hoe my app performs under those conditions.

Thanks!

Hi,

I wouldn't say we do not support zoom as a functionality, it is more the conditions that come up due to a zoomed image.

Usually a zoomed image means lower quality, camera shake and other intrinsic data sent from the camera as focal length. In an image without zoom, normal image, Vuforia gets all the information but in a zoomed image some data, conditions might not be as expected.

In an ideal zoomed setup, with good picture quality, no camera shake and having all the other above mentioned data, it might work. Unfortunately we are talking about an ideal setup which is not easily reproducible in real life, hence we do not recommend using the zoom functionality as results are not consistent.

Thank you.
