Complex object with transparency

I have two related questions - 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1. I am trying to use a metal grill / bars as my target. The aim is to make video with alpha appear behind the bars.

 

Is it possible to have an image target with transparency?

 

or to build an object target to do this.

 

If not is there another environment that would be better to do this in other than Unity / Vufioria

 

2. The target recognition is working very well with an image of the target, but not very well at the actual place. 

In contrast aurasma is picking up the target at the actual location. I would prefer to remain inside Unity Vuforia.

 

Is it possible to alter parameters to increase the the lightly hood of object recognition?

Hello,

Note that both Smart Terrain and Extended Tracking require an intialization target to bootstrap plane finding/tracking.

Smart Terrain will likely not work to find the plane behind the bars as the fidelity with a single RBG camera is low. My guess is that the algorithm will see the bars as a 'wall' and thus the ground plane will stop extending there.

Extended tracking only helps to stabilize an experience from an existing trackable type - it is not a stand-alone feature.

Have you evaluated the experience in our "Find the Penguin" sample as a possible tech solution? This is Vuforia's answer to the Pokemon Go! use case but with the additional robustness of being able to track scaling motions. It utilizes our existing UDT and Rotational Device Tracker features, so I'm wondering if the latter can help to stabilize tracking if UDT is able to provide that initial pose.

Hello, just a quick follow up question to the forum - would you recommend smart terrain or extended tracking in this case? 

Could Smart Terrain be used to do the occlusion masking or could extended tracking be used with the floor in front of the bars as the tracking plane?

Hello,

Our tracker is resilient to partial occlusions, but our detector is likely not.

Very difficult for me to ascertain why you'd be having mixed results. However, I'm assuming environmental differences may be coming into play with respect to lighting, distances, etc.

I have run some more tests and continue to be unable to make this work. Is it possible to work with partially obscured planes? 

I have tried this as a test with some success at home. but have not managed to make this work at the place.

This is not recommended as our image recognition relies upon static images. Transparent targets can introduce variability in the image processed by the SDK, which may lead to degraded performance.

At this time, the Vuforia 6.2 SDK does not provide APIs that allow for adjusting recognition parameters.

Your use case is challenging due to the lack of surface area of the bars. Vuforia's planar tracker extracts features from the environment for detection and tracking, which at best would be minimal due to the size of the bars, and the distance of the camera from them.
