Large Object Scanning

July 10, 2018 - 1:20pm #1

I'm developing an application that uses a smartphone camera to look at a car, and identify different parts of it. However, I'm not sure how to scan these individual parts as I can't isolate them to get a good 3D scan. Any help would be appreciated

I used a projection of the Vuforia Object Scanner (scale/target) . It works fine.

1. Take photos of individual car parts and add them as ImageTargets in unity proj. (So there would be 1 image target for each car part.)

2. Place simple/complex 3D models from unity onto image target in the normal way.

3. Scale and Increase focal view of ARCamera to watch all image targets in one scene. Place all image targets close to each other.

3. Run the app. Now Vuforia will match image photo targets to car parts in real world and show info on real car.

Hello dallen5513,

There are two options for what you are trying to do.

If you'd like to keep going with the Object Reco method, your best bet would be to find a way to print out a car-sized 3D scanner page and attempt to scan the whole car this way. This is likely difficult to do and will probably not result in the best detection or tracking of a car.

The other option, which we've had other customers have success with when detecting cars, is to use the Model Targets feature. This requires you to have a 3D model of the car that you can feed into the Model Target Generator to create a dataset.
