Scanner sees paper not object

September 25, 2018 - 6:05pm #1

I've never used vuforia before, but we've decided to use it to find objects for FTC. I'm trying to scan a yellow cube (it looks like this, the grid is face up), but whenever I start scanning, it makes some points on the paper in addition to the cube.

I've tried with all sorts of lighting, on all colors of background(including gray, blue works the best), but whenever I remove the paper from beneath the cube, it no longer recognizes the cube, but if I point the camera at the paper, it shows the grid around the paper, even though there's nothing there. It's as if the phone is scanning the paper instead of the cube.

I have been able to isolate the cube one time on a blue background, but I was only able to scan from a few angles, so the recognition only worked at a certain angle, and only on a blue background.

What's going on? I printed the scanning target multiple times with and without the "fit to size" printing option. So far, I've only used the scanning app on an android phone (Moto G 2nd Gen). I attached the JPG from the functional scan.

Help.

Hello @544323,

This may be the result of old documentation that has not been updated. We will investigate and update accordingly.

Scanner sees paper not object

I'm experiencing the same, though I picked some objects, that weren't very suitable in general.

But one thing I am confused about is, that I don't even have the option to remove points. In the place where it shows in the screenshot the 3 different options: Test, continue scan & Remove points. I can only see the first 2.

So was this option removed? And then what is the alternative? I downloaded and installed the Vuforia object scanner just recently.

Hello,

It is not unusual for a few feature points to be picked up from the scanning target when using the Object Target Scanning Tool.

To minimize this impact to your scanned model, be sure to follow the scanner app instructions: https://library.vuforia.com/articles/Training/Vuforia-Object-Scanner-Users-Guide, paying close attention to step #8 in the article.

Thanks,

I'm having the same issue right now, trying to get a good, clean scan of the cube. I was trying to use the target generator software (found on the downloads page), and I used a CAD model of the cube to generate a file, but it doesn't seem to be the OD file that comes out of the scanner application. I have the whole vuforia program working, but it isn't able to recognize the cube because it can't find the paper from underneath it. I have tried scanning like 7 times, but every time I try to use the test function, it only detects it on the paper, and if I take it off and move it around too much, the tracker is lost. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to import the files that the desktop application returned into Android Studio, and see if it works since once the OD file is imported to android studio, it becomes an XML, and another file, which is what the desktop app is seeming to generate. If you want CAD models/more info, just email me at
