Suggestions for best recognition method...?

Hey there,

I'm planning a project where  want to overlay an animation on a sculptural piece I'm very new to AR so I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on the best recognition method for something like this:

I understand that the contrast is very low, would something like this work as an object target? 

Would multiple image targets from different angles be a better approach?

Is Vuforia the right tool for this or are their other softwares that would work better in  this instance?

I'm  probably going to try everything to make this work, lol, but trying to research best practices before I start experimenting...
