Help with Getting Started - Setting up the SDK

May 15, 2012 - 10:30am #1

Hi there! I am a student taking an intro to app development course and for the final portion of our program we were allowed to select a personal project related to AR app development to pursue and experiment with. This led me to to Qualcomm's Vuforia SDK and while I am unfamiliar with some of the technology involved (C++, Eclipse environment) I am not one to back away from learning new things.

I am currently stuck while trying to set up the SDK to start exploring the sample programs. I've installed everything so far and believe I've followed the instructions carefully, but I'm a bit lost at Step 3 - Compile the Shared Object.

I don't understand the instructions regarding the execution of the ndk-build command. I tried navigating to the directory through Window's command prompt and executing it from there, but no luck. While searching for answers, I found that Cygwin was recommended for building the Shared Object, but I can't seem to make heads or tails of Cygwin and the little progress I made didn't produce the Shared Object.

If anyone can help me with this so I have more than just conceptual learning to present, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Thanks for the answers Peter, I'll give that a try when I get back to my station.

UPDATE: Works perfectly now, thank you!

Hello ecarv141,

It sounds like you need to set up the Android NDK still. Please see the Android NDK section of the developer portal or the Android development site. To makre sure your environment is setup correctly try compiling the San Angeles Android NDK sample project. Assuming you setup your ndk environment in C:\Development\Android , in Cygwin type"

cd /cygdrive/c/Development/Android/android-ndk-r7/samples/san-angeles

ndk-build

If you get the error "Command not found" or similar then your ndk may not be in your path yet.

Thank you,

-Peter

I followed the instructions for setting up Cygwin and I can open Cygwin and navigate to the directory fine, but I can't seem to execute the ndk-build command. I am unfortunately not at my developer station right now so I can't double check things for a couple hours.
