huge difference in tracking quality on different phones

hi,
as the title suggests i've noticed a problem. i made an qcar application with unity without any special interaction, just geometry and texture.

i made an apk and installed it on a xperia x10 (android 2.1) and a galaxy s. on the galaxy s the framerate is nearly twice as much as on the x10. still the tracking works by far better on the x10. on the galaxy s there is a clear delay visible on the display when the device is moved. any faster motion usually results in the tracking getting lost on the galaxy s while it works just fine on the x10. another very annoying issue i experience on the galaxy s is that the augmented geometry sometimes starts to move around although the phone is not really moved (seems like a misinterpretation of the trackable).

do you have any suggestions what this is based on or how to solve that issue?
any help or infos on similar observations appreciated.

The new version of the AR sdk for unity solved the tracking problem experienced with our galaxy S GT-I9000M.

That's pretty much right, small errors get multiplied the further you are from the center of the target. This is even worse when you're tracking from above (looking straight down at the target) as the pose estimate is less precise from this angle.

The Beta2 SDK is better optimized for some devices. With the 1.0 release of our SDK you will see performance improvements across all devices. Stay tuned for our 1.0 release.

Not to sidetrack this thread, but what is it that causes that? - jittering when the augmentation is offset from the origin of the trackable?

hi peter,
you are right. i'm working on unity and actually unity apk files didn't run at all on android 2.1 on the galaxy s. so it's running android 2.2 now!

Thankyou for the video. Are you running Android 2.1 or 2.2 on the Galaxy S GT-I9000. It looks like you are using the Unity game enginer for development from your video. There are known performance issues with the Galaxy S running Android 2.1 and Unity. The Unity forums have more information on this limitation at http://forum.unity3d.com/ and search for "Galaxy S".

Hi,

I experience a similar problem with the galaxy S GT-I9000M running android 2.2 froyo. Tracking seems unstable: we see the virtual object jumping on the tracktable, rescaling and rotating on the plane. The same unity project was working great on a Nexus one. We have no interaction in the application, the scene is a simple fixed object.

Keep us posted if you find a solution, I'll do the same. Still, I think the solution will come from qualcomm side.

hi peter,
thanks for your reply. we are talking about a x10i and a GT-I9000 (both austrian carriers).
the geometry is not reaching very high above the trackable. i'm working with a simple city model. the trackable is on a3 paper and considering that the highest buildings are about 20-25cm tall. i was already working with geometry reaching further above the trackable without any problems on the x10.

Can you please send the model number of the Galaxy S and Xperia X10 phones you are using. Is it an X10i ? You can find the model number by going to settings -> About Phone -> Model number . Also, does your augmentation come far off the trackable? Sometimes "tall" augmentations can wobble at the top a bit.
