Increase range for FrameMarkers

Hi there,

I'm developing an application, that needs to detect FrameMarkers at a distance of about 3-4 meters. Currently I'm using a FrameMarker with the size of a dina4 paper. I can detect this marker up to a distance of about 2 meters.

So the question is, is there a possibility to increase the range of detection, without further increasing the size of the marker? Is it possible to use common id markers and would they increase the detection range? Or can the FrameMarkers be improved in some ways, to be easier to detect?

I'd just like to add that for various applications, we at twnkls would also REALLY like (frame) markers to be detectable/trackable at larger distances.

This is one of the things we just had to ask for when we met the Qualcomm AR team at ISMAR this year: we are developing several novel fusion algorithms that combine the vision tracking with the device's sensors, and the ability to track markers at a greater distance would really add great value. In fact so much so that with the current max distance, we would have to use an alternative tracker, which is certainly not what we want.

For these scenarios, we have no problem whatsoever with losing the picture in the marker, so an alternative marker type would be a good solution.

QCAR does not provide a camera zoom feature, sorry.

I need it to work only in iphone.
Even half or 1/3 of the zoom will be great
In my application educe the field of view is acceptable.
Any one know if its possible to do so and how(qcar api like QCAR::CameraDevice or only ios native) ?

Increasing the zoom will reduce the field of view and will impact the user experience significantly. Besides, most devices do not support hardware zoom. The iPad 2 doesn't even support hardware focus. It's pathetic.

I Have the same need.
I wonder if applying zoom can help.
If so what is the right way of doing it - native ios framework or QCAR::CameraDevice ?

I have a feature request relating to this. If you increase the size of the binary pattern, it should be visible at a greater range. When this is done, the binary pattern cannot just span the edge of the marker but must be distributed throughout the marker. It would look a bit like a QR code, but with a bigger block size.

The disadvantage of this is that the marker cannot contain a random picture in the middle. But personally I am not interested in that anyway. I just want the markers to be visible at the greatest distance possible. So perhaps Qualcomm can make an additional frame marker type which looks like a QR code? Presumably this shouldn't be too difficult to make since you already have the framework for the image recognition and binary pattern recognition. And making these two different type of frame markers will will make us all happy :-)

Sorry for the late reply on this. You were actually correct, frame markers track better at a distance than image targets. One way to think about this is the amount of space the trackable must occupy in the camera image to be tracked. Image targets need roughly twice the resolution of frame markers. Image targets are more robust when it comes to camera blur and occlusion, however.

I've just started using QCAR - big thanks for making this available - it's great.

I've been trying to get distance too, I've found that from the samples Frame Markers printed at A3 size achieved around 7 m before falling apart and that the stones lost registration at around 5. I'm interested to try with a bolder image then stones but I'm wondering if you could give the optimal settings for upload size. Or even give some examples of bolder images that would work - if test like this have already been done.

QCAR currently only supports frame markers in the marker category. Can you possibly use image targets instead? You can design image targets with bold features that track well at a distance.
