Virtual button

December 16, 2011 - 2:35pm #1

Hi,

Is it possible to recognize a virtual button of random shape (e.g oval) or from user-defined image of the button?

E.g: I have a desk-phone, the application need to recognize buttons on the phone, how can I do this? :(

The virtual button is just part of the image target, you design it into the image. Take a look at the "wood" target that comes with the VirtualButtons sample. There are no real rules about what the button should look like, as long as the button area is feature-rich.

Thank you for response. How can I define the image of a virtual button? In the sample, I found only coordinates of the rectangle?

Virtual buttons are defined as a rectangular area of the image, although you could still set up your image to contain an oval area for the user to touch. The important thing is to have a nice set of features in and around the button. You probably won't be able to use virtual buttons to trigger off sparse objects like real-world buttons. What's more, the SDK isn't designed to track real-world 3D objects, rather it's meant to track 2D print (e.g. photos, illustrations, markers, etc.) You can track 3D objects made of planar sides with feature-rich print (e.g. a cereal box), but an arbitrary 3D object such as a phone will not work well.
