Why Vuforia don't recognize some words?

March 24, 2014 - 4:23pm #1

Hi.

I'm making a project with text reco and Unity 4. My app recognize spanish names and I maded my own Filter list.

Everything works as I spected, but when I want to recognize a name like "emilio" it doesnt work. I've added the name on my own filter list, even in the Unity Inspector and nothing seems to work.

Is there any way to solve this?

Best regards, Alex.

I've tryed with the same webcam of my computer and its not detected. Some other names with problems are:

Achille

Alessandro

Agustine

A long name like "ghoochannejhad" or "konstantinos" can be detected without problems.

My Android test devices:

Motorola Atrix HD

Sony Xperia Tab Z

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

My iOS test devices:

iPad AIR

The word "Emiliano" seems to be hard to detect, indeed;   however I have tested only on one low-end device here.

Have you tried on different devices ? what is your current device used for testing ?

Thanks Alessandro and I'm so sorry for my late response.

After create a new file with textreco-2-8-9 sample, for a strange case the name "EMILIO" was finally  recognized. But, when I try "EMILIANO" or "emiliano" it doesn't work.

If I add "miliano" (without "e") to the word list, that word is recognized. Or different combinations like:

emili
emilio
emilian

but "emiliano" cannot be readed. For testing purpose, I'm using a printed list of names with Arial font and Times New Roman.

I hope you can test with that name.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi, just tried to reproduce this with Unity 4.3 and Vuforia 2.8.7 (i.e. the latest), using the TextReco sample and adding the word "emilio" (and a few other words) in the Addtional Words in the Inspector panel of the TextRecognition prefab.

The app was able to detect "emilio" (all lower-case letters), as well as "EMILIO" (all capital letters);

I did print the word Emilio using 3 different fonts (to see if it could make any difference):

  • Arial
  • Times New Roman
  • Courrier New

In all cases the app was able to easily detect the word "emilio" as well as "EMILIO".

Things to check:

- try changing the Font of your printed words, to see if it makes any difference (maybe you are using some special font which is not very common ?); keep in mind that the Vuforia text recognition engine can recognize text printed/rendered in most commonly occurring serif andsans serif fonts.

- try to change the size of your printed words, or keeping the device closer to the printed words

- check that your Region of Interest window is not too large (as this may affect performance; for instance, avoid a ROI region that matches the whole screen size)
