AR in malls

March 5, 2012 - 10:38am #4

hi , I'm not sure if it's the right place to ask this , but I'm so excited about the AR effect that national geographic did in a shopping mall , here's the video :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95rBrcXV54o
I've only used FLARtoolkit and Vuforia , I was looking for a way to build something like this for large places like shopping malls , I'll be appreciated if you have any suggestions

Is this what you're referring to - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noPalKUhAfo&feature=related

The video you've linked is just someone talking about NatGeo's AR strategy.

It looks cool in that video, however that particular AR suffers from the "2 layer" problem. I noticed it when someone stepped in front of the cheatah in virtual 3D space yet the cheetah still appeared in front of the person. Unfortunately this is a problem with almost all AR systems. The graphics is always overlayed on top of the camera image. The camera has no depth information on what it sees. I would say the person who compiled that video chose to omit all cases where people were walking in front of the images. If you want AR to interact with real 3D objects then you would need 2 cameras or an RGBD camera (like the Kinect sensor). Now put that in a mall and you will make something better than what National Geographic did!
