Augment a entire room

July 31, 2014 - 7:18am #1

I'm currently trying to augment a entire empty room with furnitures and lining (almost VR). I can't use decades of markers which would each augment a specific furniture because it would pop when tracking and losing tracking. We want everything to be augmented at anytime.

Questions and thoughts:

* If we set up properly the real room with markers and the virtual room to match exactly. The camera will flow through markers and the virtual room will augment the room correctly while we track a marker. But this means everything has to be ajusted before use, for each room. No adaptation.

* Using Unified Coordinate System, I set up the virtual room with their calibration tool wherever the markers are (only the main marker has to be correctly placed). More flexibility.

* Using a marker and extended tracking. Too inaccurate (empty room nothing to SLAM track).

* Using MutliTargets and inverse the sides to make us inside the cube. I'd need a big marker on each wall.Is this possible? This also means I'd not be able to zoom somewhere where there is no marker visible.

Does anyone want to discuss what would be the best idea, even those I haven't think of (space sensor?, plugins, ...), or has been in similar project. I would like advices, ideas and brains.

This implies an accurate calibration on site and my wish is to avoid that.

Imagine I have a room to augment, I will work from plans to make the exactly same room in 3D. Then I add the augmented objects to it. If I place a marker or whatever at a defined place in the room (at the bottom of a corner on the floor is perfect) I would just have to place the same marker in the real room to calibrate it. That way I don't have to be on site, to make it work correctly (Sometimes clients lives far from office).

The idea is to provide a turnkey solution. Only the 3D content would change.

full-6d-vrar from metaio and just a marker for initialisation seems to be a great way to achieve this. But I want to make it with Vuforia of course.

A point on your MultiTargets, you can do more than just invert the cube, you can move the planes about too and position them any way you want using the xml file. I've used this approach before to fill an L-shaped show booth with markers and allow the augmented content to be displayed across the whole booth.
