Augmented Reality Visual Code Builder for Unity [WIP]

September 24, 2013 - 4:11pm #1
Hi everyone,

I work at the Human Interface Technology Lab in New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ), and one of our research interests is making technology such as Augmented Reality more accessible to non-programmers.

As part of this, we've been working on a Visual Programming tool for Unity, leveraging the power of the Vuforia plugin, to allow non-programmers to develop rich interactive AR experiences without ever writing a single line of code. By connecting boxes together which perform simple actions, users can create complex interaction and behaviours, and then deploy their application to Android or iOS devices.

A video which demos some of the features can be seen here:

The Code Builder is still very much a work in progress, and at the moment we're looking for some beta testers who would like to try it out and give us feedback/suggestions for new features/find bugs. Once the project is bit further along, we're planning on a public release, but for the moment we'd like to have a smaller test so we don't get buried in bug fixes and help needed emails.

EDIT: Unfortunately the AR Code Builder Project has been discontinued and is no longer available. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Cheers,
Adrian

Augmented Reality Visual Code Builder for Unity [WIP]

Hi Alessandro,

Thanks for your feedback. This project was actually started by a student intern we had at the start of the year, and I have only become involved recently since the student finished their internship. I believe the student conducted a small survey of existing solutions before he started work, but I haven't seen the survey personally.

I will try and get a hold of the student and see if he still has the information, and I will definitely check out PlayMaker for myself.

EDIT: Unfortunately the AR Code Builder Project has been discontinued and is no longer available. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Thanks,

Adrian

Hi Adrian, thanks for sharing this, I watched the video and found it very nice and impressive.

One question:

have you heard about a tool called PlayMaker for Unity ? This seems to have some common aspects

(see http://www.hutonggames.com/)

If yes, it would be nice if you could highlight what are (in your opinion) key differentiating elements of your Tool with respect to PlayMaker, as we have also seen some reports from people using PlayMaker, so there is definitely a community interest in this kind of tools and frameworks.
