Automating the import of AR assets into Unity

July 21, 2011 - 1:47am #1

Hello group-
Does anyone know of a script, or is there a process, by which one can automate the import of AR assets into the Unity workspace - such as, say, from a database? In other words, if I have a database of different AR assets, and I have a standard Unity scene that I want to use again and again, with the same trackable/lighting/positioning, is there a way to automate the use of different AR assets from the database, on a regular update schedule? (i.e. I have Trackable001 image floating out in the real world as Ad Copy. I want AR_Asset_001 to be associated with it on Monday, AR_Asset_002 on Tuesday, AR_Asset_003 on Wednesday, so on. Is there an automated solve for this?)
Thanks.

Yes Unity can load assets dynamically at runtime. Here's a tutorial - http://unity3d.com/support/resources/example-projects/assetbundles.html

But I think that this feature may be restricted to Unity Pro. You'll want to check their license / feature matrix.

You'd need to write your own code to accomplish the scheduled updating that you describe, but that shouldn't be too difficult.
