Camera Post Effects in AR

November 30, 2010 - 6:24am #1

Unity Pro features image effects like motion blur, sepia etc.
My phone, HTC Desire, also has a few image effects.

I would like to utilize, if possible, these effects in the AR environment.

I suspect the effects from the device would screw with the tracking, but I think the Unity effects are post, so they could possibly work.

Any thoughts?

I did some testing in the meantime and discovered that the Unity Pro Image Effects actually do work.

I had to build it with Graphics Level set to OpenGL ES 2.0 instead of 1.x.
The downside is that it's very heavy when using the AR plugin, so it was not really an option after all.

What I basically want to achieve is a nightvision / infrared feeling.
So some sort of post-effect would be best I guess.

Do you need to apply the effects to the camera image itself? Currently, the camera is rendered to the background in native code, and you do not have access to it for further processing. This is something that might change in another release, however.

Post processing the image would not affect tracking, unless it greatly alters the positioning of the camera image (in which case the 3D objects would no longer line up correctly).
