can I use vuforia without markers?

August 16, 2013 - 2:56pm #5

Is it possible for me to use vuforia in the following scenario:

Have no printed markers, and no detection,

Tell the Vuforia SDK that there is a marker located at camera position 0,0

Rotate camera position using the gyroscope,

And display all my 3d objects as if there were a marker at my feet.

I've already coded something matching the unity 3d camera to the gyroscope, and ios camera; but my 3d scaling is not very good. I'm hoping I can use a vuforia to solve that problem.

Thanks,

Vuforia is purely a computer vision based SDK.

As you can see the challenge w/ the approach you're proposing is going to be how to accurately position the augmentation by dead reckoning, using inertial sensors a/o compass.

Have you looked at our User Defined Targets feature? - that uses computer vision but doesn't require that you pre-define a target image.

I dig it's computer vision based, and dead reckoning, with a rotation of 360 degrees triggered by the gyro/compass really is good enough for what I need.

So, am I right in assuming:

Vuforia uses computer vision to detect where a marker is,

Ther marker's image target has 3d objects as children,

Based on the location of the marker, vuforia updates the AR camera position.

I know I can make 3d objects stay visible, even when the marker is not visible.

So my question becomes - can I manually tell vuforia where the marker is?

Can I manually change the rotation of Vuforia's AR camera?

If that was the case, I could:

tell Vuforia that the marker is at my feet,

position my objects relative to the imageTarget,

rotate vueforia's camera in response to gyroscope/compass readings.

Would that work?

Yes you can orient the ARCamera when there is no target detected, but the camera will be oriented automatically during tracking. You can also use a standard Unity camera to avoid this issue.

You are confusing each of the 3dof (x,y,z) & (pitch, roll, yaw).

You can use the gyro to get the 3 degrees of rotation but not position.  You can manually assign a point of origin but the relative POSITION of the camera will never update which means no AR.

hope this helps clear things up.
