Can't seem to access the device's camera

July 16, 2011 - 10:20am #1

i've managed to run the Image target app on my device (Galaxy S) through Unity Remote.
i know that it works because i added a simple touch interface and sensed the clicks back in unity.
but all i can see is the unity stage... i see no camera feed...

i already run the QCAR app on this device from Eclipse, this is why i'm certain it should work.

do i need any dll's in my project's directory?

Hello Shacher,

Development in Unity with the QCAR Extension is possible with Unity alone. To Deploy on an Android device, Unity + Android is required. Previewing your AR app with live camera background is not supported in the Unity editor.

Unity Pro + Android Pro also allow you to deploy your application on an Android device and provides extra features. See the Unity website for more information on the difference between the free version of Unity and Unity Pro.

Unity provides a 30 day trial of Unity Pro + Android Pro if you want to try the development environment out first before you buy.

Thank you,

-Peter

hi Peter,

so for what i understand this is the way a developer can work with the Unity component:
1. program the environment and add the assets in Unity.
2. testing the app is available only by:
- building the application with Unity Pro + Extension for Android,
- installing it on a device in order to see it working with a live camera.

previewing the app in the Editor without a live camera feed and no augmentation simulation gives me no feedback regarding the user experience...
it can only tell me that my code can be compiled.

thanks,
shachar

Hello Shacher,

Unity remote is not supported. However you can build your project and preview it in the Unity Editor without a device. You will not have a live camera view and the augmentation will not turn on and off. Have you tried requesting a demo of Unity pro with Android Pro? Unity provides a 30 day demo for free at their website.

Thank you,

-Peter

hey Peter,

my model number is GT-I19000T .

I am trying to run the app with Unity Remote. is that a problem?

I cannot build the app into an APK yet, because i dont want to buy a license before i'm sure i can make basic apps with the interface QCAR+Unity offers me.
is that a must?

thanks,
shachar

Hello,

Can you tell me the model number of your device? Are you trying to run the sample app with Unity remote? Can you build the APK and install and run on the device while the device is not connected to the computer?

Thank you,

-Peter

Hey Peter,

my problem was probably misunderstood.
i have an android device (Galaxy S).
i have succeeded running other Unity apps on it, and also have succeeded running the Java version (from Eclipse) of the ImageTargets Demo.

But, from some reason when i run the Unity sample of ImageTargets i can't seem to get the device's camera to run and to be active...

Hello,

It sounds like you are trying to get the camera input from the Android device in the Unity Editor. Is that correct? Unfortunately the QCAR libraries only run on the Android device so you won't be able to get the camera input in the editor.

Thank you,

-Peter
